google maps was not made in a year. relax.

also, i am in turkey and installed ios 6 gm today. in maps, satellite view of my location is pretty good, it shows down to the building and you can see some building details. but it's not as smooth or as detailed as google maps was. (detail difference between maps is just a little tho)

if apple does not act like "ok maps is done, finished, no more improvements" it's gonna be ok. they gotta work on it tho.

Who cares. It's top notch now. If people experience a serious downgrade in a mobile mapping solution they have gotten used to over the last 5 years, there will be a lot of unhappy bunnies.

That may be so but why release it so early? It's not like this is an option application, all applications on the iPhone that use mapping data will be forced to use this rubbish.

It's a degraded service being forced on users (if they want iOS6 that is...).

Just highlighting how far out the map of Dudley is...

That's not a small country village either, it's a large town with a population of 200,000 located in the country's second biggest conurbation.

Apple Maps looks like it's been rushed to hit the iOS 6 deadline when maybe they should've taken a bit longer with it and put it in iOS 7. Having said that, the 3D maps around Manchester city centre are impressive.

No, I can't report it because I'm not a developer. The Apple Maps image belongs to SimonTheSoundMa.

It's ok I have reported them.

It's a shame that so many Yelp POIs are missing. If anyone in the West Midlands wants to help Yelp they after reviewers. All paid (£30-150) plus expenses (travel and dining costs).

As a Waze editor I don't like helping out TomTom though. Perhaps a friendly push to get them to update roads that changed three years ago is better for everyone else so reported those. :)

Wait, is Apple using the same maps TomTom is? If yes then god help us, at least here in Europe...

Just been through most of the POIs in my home town and almost all of them are in the wrong place. I've reported them all.

Looks good. I think people from Leeds, Bristol and Sheffield will be complaining soon about not having their cities included over Manchester.

iOS 6 GM Maps

Incase anyone did not notice, cities that have 3D Flyover will display a little 3D building icon when you zoom in enough to use Flyover. Those areas that do not have 3D Flyover will display the plain "3D" icon.

Also I am pretty sure Apple is going to continue to update the back-end for maps and those areas that do not yet have a color satellite view will get them eventually. Although I am unsure if Flyover will be available everywhere (I am guessing just major cities and in due time).

I don't have iOS 6 yet but it's pretty obvious that Apple Maps will be nowhere near as good as Google Maps. This is Apple's first attempt so it will take a while for things to get up to scratch. The best thing about maps for me is Street View, something Apple don't even have. Hopefully Google release a standalone maps app soon.

Yes. Apple partnered with TomTom. Let's remember that Google dumped Tele Atlas to go it alone. Nokia partnered with Navteq. Basically, nobody wanted Tele Atlas and finally Tom Tom bought them. So, that's what we are getting.

The extent of Google maps that Apple would need to match:

20 PB of imagery and published over five million miles of Street View roads. That's just about 20,000 1TB HDDs. 187 countries of driving directions of 26 million miles. They also have a map maker service.

I am sure they could put those self-driving cars to very good use!

I wouldn't expect to pay around £600 for a device that claims mapping to be one of it's key features and get this; in fact I would be furious, and I'm continuing to question whether or not the iPhone 5 + iOS6 is for me.

Furthermore, if on release it can't stand on its own against its competitors, namely Google maps, it has failed. It doesn't matter how new it is or how long Google has been working on theirs, that's the risk Apple took when it decided to take them on and it's laughable to think that a market cuts a company slack for any reason if it delivers an inferior product.
