Apple Maps to Get These 10 New Features in iOS 27

It looks like they still don't allow me to manually override the last-known EV SOC and specify that I will be at 100% for future route planning. I guess I'll stick with ABRP for another year.

Flyover is just a grimmick features. Most of users would use it once or twice then give up.

Why didn't Apple spend engineering efforts on other tweak or enhancement, eg. add an option for setting language in Map app other than the systemwide language for the phone?

I suppose map should be built for bilingual to facilitate travelling.

There are two things called Flyover. One was a kind of mini-movie, called City Tours for a few cities. This appears to be dead.

But the other aspect, being able to see a city in 3D view, I frequently find very useful. If I'm driving to a part of the city I don't know well, I can look around my destination to see what to expect and look for parking. If there's some building I pass frequently that looks intriguing, I can see it from every angle to understand it. If I'm traveling in a new city, I can get a feel for the area around my hotel before I walk out and explore. I know people who frequently consider buying houses (as a business) who find it incredibly useful for exploring the neighborhood and even the feel of the house (eg it may have a large lot, but the lot is very sloped).

If people aren't using it much, I think that's because it takes time to get used to anything new, and they haven't yet tried it enough.
And of course it doesn't help that Google has nothing similar (as far as I know, just "Raised Buildings" in its graphical, non-satellite, mode) so people who rely on their "technical" friends on Android for good ideas never get it suggested to them.

I wish Maps accepts user manipulation. Far too many times it is zooming in and out by itself, or some page slides up that I didn't want. I also want a way to move the route to my preference, because I know the suggested routes won't work for me for whatever reason. Adding and removing stops, as well as duration of them can be a lot better.

I'm not sure why car location can't be in the Find My app

I suspect at least some of this stuff is being delayed because it's better handled by voice, and that we will get much better support soon. (Maybe not in 27, but in 28 as every app builds on what's in 27).

Yeah, car in Find My is a dumb thing, an easy fix. If you would like to do better, get a long-life AirTag holder, something like this

This gives you 10 yrs of Airtag battery life and you can just tuck it anywhere in the car that people are unlikely to look. Not only will it now show you the car on Find My, but you have a kinda poor man's OnStar for (hopefully) finding it if it's ever stolen.

I just want to be able to save a transit route to my calendar. Google Maps has done that for over a decade. Why can't Apple Maps do this?!

Still no mention of any sort of Look Around rollout in the UK. They're out driving all the time taking photos and mapping all the roads, and yet only London and a random bit up in Scotland from Edinburgh down to the border of England has any coverage. This is in stark contrast to the rest of Europe, including Ireland.

"I want to drive from Raleigh, NC to Buffalo, NY. Today I just want to drive 8 hours, getting gas and lunch 4 hours into the trip. What gas stations/restaurants are near the 4 hour time? Also I'll need to stay overnight, so what hotels are available near the 8 hour mark? Note: I prefer Holiday Inn Express"

Or even "NC to Buffalo via RT 17 through Warrenton, Va (to avoid DC traffic)" The only way to do that is making an actual stop in Warrenton. But that takes you into Warrenton. So when you are close you need to remove the stop so it routes via the bypass.

Is that too much to ask?

Or something like it knowing that if I use the route to go to the grocery store that it's most likely a round trip. So determine the round trip time and see if traffic is bad enough that a different store would be worthwhile visiting.
(we have a grocery store near us, about 3 mile away, but the return trip sometimes takes 20-30 min depending on the time of day. So it might be worthwhile to go to the one 5 miles away and avoid that traffic)

Existing features including Visited Places and Guides are expanding to more countries in iOS 27.

I wouldn’t call Visited Places an “existing feature”, as it’s in beta and very rough.

I’ve been using it since it came out and it will sometimes do very well at capturing all the places I’ve been in a day... and then randomly it will just basically skip a place I’m at for like 3 hours, or even just miss recording anything for most of a day. I don’t want to kvetch too much because it is in beta -- but it’s definitely not a complete feature right now.

The key missing feature remains: weather radar overlay.

If you're on a roadtrip, it's a matter of safety to know precisely where along your route dangerous weather is likely to occur so that you can take appropriate measures. Otherwise, you're just stopping with others under an overpass. Or maybe pulling over to wait out the downpour on the roadside, like a sitting duck hoping not to be rear-ended by a defiant idiot.

Agree about this fully. For now, there are some pretty good third-party CarPlay apps that will give you a weather map as you’re driving. Do hope Apple puts the pieces together, though. They have the map, they have your location, they have the weather radar and even the weather alerts.

Ibut you have a kinda poor man's OnStar for (hopefully) finding it if it's ever stolen.

Any smart thief these days knows to park it someplace inconspicuous and let it cool off, and knows to pay attention to the not your AirTag alerts that pop-up on phones to tell you you are being tracked by someone.

And yet I used Apple Maps (for walking, public transit [bus and subway in Taipei], and driving all over the island of Taiwan. Same in Thailand. Same in Canada.

The Maps app icon has also been refreshed with a new, multi-layered Liquid Glass design.

I am really disappointed that the streets and the direction marker do not also have their own separate layers … 😉
