Apple Maps will never make inroads against Google or Waze until they start including speed cameras, at least in the UK.
I agree. The only reason I use Waze is for speed camera locations and information entered by its users (such as stopped vehicles and police locations - which is pretty accurate).

Pretty cool for a start of public transport in France. Just tried planning a route from a small French village to Geneva in Switzerland and it offered some good options, including the countryside bus line to get to the nearest train station.

Switzerland (which is small) had public transport for a while now, but France is new.
Yeah, well, at least in Switzerland, it takes walking time to the station into account but not the time it takes to switch platforms. Maybe because of this it omits connections that take slightly longer but can actually be achieved in reality. It also only list departing platforms but not arriving platforms (knowing the latter can help orienting yourself, in particular if there is a tight connection).

Or just run Waze in the background for alerts and then Apple Maps for navigation, thats what i do as i dont like the navigation etc of Waze but the other alerts are quite useful.

Works in France, Toulouse! Incredible, i've been waiting for this for the past 4 years!

And I agree with "one more", the routes that are provided are fairly rational. Either the actual shortest/quickest way to get there. This is very good.

I used Apple Maps transit routing in Berlin a few months ago and it worked well. But where available, City Mapper beats both Apple and Google Maps in my experience.

While directions are available in many cities across Europe, my experience has been very poor. In Oslo the directions to enter the train station are completely wrong and take you somewhere where there is no entrance. I mean, in general walking directions in Europe are horrible. I guess like my boss from US says "Americans don't walk" so it makes sense for Apple Maps to have poor walking directions.
Living in Oslo and only using Apple Maps. Have no problems whatsoever with it. Wich station in Oslo was wrong???

Excellent idea. Apple should install speed cameras everywhere taking photos of everyone using Google or Waze and exceeding the speed limit. Everyone will switch to Apple Maps.
How droll. I meant police speed camera locations, but then I'm sure you knew that.

This is why I still use my Tom Tom ( and my speedometer ;) )
TomTom includes speed camera alerts, at least it does in the UK.

Seems to have the local public transport for Stuttgart, Germany but not the Deutsche Bahn (S-Bahn) or bus

Maps VS Google Maps

i also don’t like the interface of Maps, looks confusing and doesnt seem to consider walking times

Edit: nvm, looks like it does have all the above but not in the initial overview so yes it is indeed more confusing that google maps

It does consider walking times. The duration includes it already, and if you show details, it’ll show you each leg (walk, get on train, transfer, get on other train, walk, you’re done).

I don’t really find it that confusing.

It's live in Denmark too :) which is nice, cause then I'm able to see how it would take me 2 hours - including 35 minutes of walking - to get to work using public transportation, while it takes me around 17 minutes by car.

Yeah, I don't live downtown...

Nice update! Now only bike directions are missing. Google maps has had that for years now. I hope Apple gets on board soon so that I can finally dump the last google app...

Great news for the EU.

I’ve been using it for a while in London since I realise they added public transport e.g you can say A to B which includes walking directions to the bus stop, the next 10+ departures, the amount of stops to stay on for/where to get off and then the tube entrance and exit.

I’ve been forcing myself to use Maps a lot more and ween myself off Google location services and it’s been pretty decent besides some glaring issues e.g not finding popular locations but finding restaurants near them.

I love How some people immediately managed to derail the conversation from European transit to CarPlay and speed traps. Typical car-centric culture at work.

Anyways, I'm really glad to finally see transit directions rolled out across Germany, after it has been rumored to come 'any day now' for months. I'll still have to check the local apps for delays sadly, but on non-critical routes/connections Apple Maps will be my go to now as I just like the interface and directions more than any of the other apps I've tried (Citymapper, Moovit, Transit, Google Maps, ...)

"Never make inroads." Apple Maps has been by far the most used mapping app on iOS for several years.

Living near London: So what are these directions that I'm getting for ages in Apple Maps when I ask for directions from A and B and click on "public transport", and then it tells me which train to board, what station to exit, which bus to take from there and so on? Is "Transit Directions" something different?

No, London region has had it for a while now, and your using Apple Transit.

But then you lose the better interface, and much nicer Look Around, but most of all, you give Google all of your private data to add the dossier they are building on you. No thanks!

My biggest issue with transit direction on Apple Maps is that it doesn't do the walking portion correctly. When I start a walking directions destination, I notifications on my watch and phone when I get to a turn, and some other nice things, like rerouting and such. But when I start a transit directions destination, it works well until I have to walk a portion, it should switch to walking directions, but it doesn't, even if I start walking the wrong way, it won't reroute or anything.

Am I missing something or the list is still not updated? Any update about which cities are now available?

Google maps has worked on CarPlay for ages....or are you talking about specifically the digital dashboard, where the speedo etc is?

Nope, I mean CarPlay dashboard:

You can have maps, music and other active features on a single display. On my BMW, I have a 10.3" widescreen display so it works brilliantly.

Unfortunately, the current (non-beta), iOS 13.x only allows for Apple Maps on this display, so I don't use it as the GPS directions are terrible in Spain (where I live). I also cross-country borders often, and it handles that terribly.

While this feature won't yet be available on my car, I am looking forward to HUD navigation integration in future BMW models. Hopefully when I upgrade again in 4-5 years, I'll be able to use this feature as it's the sole reason I don't use CarPlay navigation as it doesn't integrate on my HUD display.

Ha! Dossier Google has on you. Did you see the programme on Amazon the other night and the dossier they hold about you - do you use Amazon? Personally all this hyperbole and paranoia about personal information, I don’t give a hoot. It’s pretty much impossible to avoid in today’s world.
Apple Maps may be popular with iOS but what about the global market. Google Maps is still the best of the free apps. Personally I pay for TomTom which is the most comprehensive and includes speed cameras.

Newsflash- iOS is global with well over 1.5 BILLION active devices in the world. And the choice isn't between Amazon and Google, though Amazon pales in comparison to Google's databases, but rather Google and Apple! It isn't, as you claim, impossible to avoid that data harvesting. You can avoid much, not all, simply by not using Google products, along with using a tracker blocker, etc., on web searches. Remember, it's not each single bit of discreet data, but rather the accumulation and linkage of all of your personal data by Google into a virtual dossier on you and your family that you should be concerned about. Fortunately, Apple provides an alternative to Google's massive harvesting of every photo, every web search and click, every document, everywhere you go, every email, etc., all being amassed on you and your family.

What part of my stating I don’t give a hoot did you not understand? If you believe Amazon are not to be feared as much as Google then I would urge you to watch this weeks Panorama BBC iPlayer. It’s also been revealed this week that Apple are using location services and maps in order to build a dossier of your every movement. As said though I use the TomTom paid for app which is the best of the lot.
Oh and as an aside where possible I have replaced Apple apps on our iPhones with Google alternatives simply because in many cases they are better e.g. Google photos.

Congratulations, you win the Fake News of the Year award. It's a dubious title, but you did earn it.
