Apple Maps in Toronto is already better than Google and has been for a few years. I kept Google Maps on my phone in case Apple couldn’t find something but when Google started giving me roundabout directions across the city and checking with Apple Maps which was giving me smarter more direct routes, I deleted Google and haven’t gone back.

I’m looking forward to Apple’s version of street view. I prefer fFlyover most of the time but on occasion, it’s useful to see what something looks like from a human perspective.

What Apple hasn’t explained is how long it takes from the mapping to when it is reflected in the Maps app. I have been through some areas that they claimed to have gone through earlier this year and I don’t see any difference in Maps yet.

They’re updating Maps server side constantly. There’s no wait for iOS updates. In Toronto, this is particularly obvious because it’s the city with the most construction cranes in North America and you can watch as buildings are finished and the maps are updated.

I tend to use it for direction when driving around Toronto, but finding businesses or restaurants to eat at, and being a bit of a newcomer, Apple Maps and Google Maps both have their equal set of frustrations at times. Necessity to confirm/check with both to figure out if a business may still be there. Maybe I'm missing something really, really simple with Apple Maps, but go ahead, and look for directions to Pearson. Google suggests that you may be after terminal 1 or 3. Apple not so much, until you start typing 'Pearson t'. It'll happily send you on your way to Terminal 3 by default.

I think the difference is acceptable because for the moment Apple map should focus on getting navigation right instead of the "add-on" features like restaurant recommendation. I personally find the user interface of Apple map is just easier on eyes.
Very often if you want to go to a place you just type the name of the entity and the address is shown automatically. Searching first the address via google and typing it in Apple Maps is a pain in the ***

Good, now Apple Maps will quit telling me there's a single through lane and a single U-turn lane even though there are three through lanes, a left turn lane, and U-Turns are illegal in some of those intersections.

They've come along way since 2012; they really should've announced the product in beta.

What they released in September 2012 was an alpha product, at best. It was shameful of them to stand on stage at that launch event and proudly proclaim, “the more you use Apple Maps, the better it will get!” — which was an outright lie.

I was driving next to an Apple maps car in toronto today so I guess I’ll be looking myself up whenever it releases

Well, it's certainly about time that Apple began to survey Canada. I use Apple Maps a lot, but it could use some much-needed improvements. This is a step in the right direction, hopefully.

I still don't understand why there isn't a web based Apple Maps.

They would be able to acquire so much more data if Apple Maps results were available on a browser, instead, you have to use an iOS device, which to me is a draconian requirement.

I use Apple Maps on a MacOS device, not just an iOS device everyday, but maybe you meant something else. As far as acquiring data, what are you referring to?

It must be fun driving in an Apple car, you probably get to see what most others wouldn't.

WTH! I just pulled up Apple Craps (err, I mean Maps) on my MBP that is hardwired with an ethernet connection. I clicked on the Show You Current Locate button and got the following message box stating I needed to turn on WiFi. Seriously! Does Apple not know that ethernet can also give me an internet connection? Are their developers really that stupid these days? Apparently so! and yes the ethernet connection was providing 200 Mbits solid connection at the time...

It's probably because these applications scan for SSID's around you, which help pinpoint a location. For example, look at this site:
https://wigle.net/

You can take the unique SSIDs and other router-specific information from around you to better determine your location, even if people move or routers get replaced, etc.

While I hate getting the WiFi warning, it's not about the developers being stupid, it's actually because the developers are much smarter that most people and have a better understanding of technology.

This goes for Google and Apple, so I'm not playing favorites. I don't like the Tim Cook Apple, but credit is given where it is due.

Also, if you read the message, it says it provides better location accuracy, not faster map resolution. Your speed of internet has nothing to do with pinpointing your location....yet.

Spying? On what exactly? So now Apple surveying is considered espionage?
Well, I mean....

It is spying if you consider this a real invasion of Canada.

Just as well they're doing this in summer. In winter all you'd see is lots of white.

I am hoping for Apple Street View this WWDC.

:(

That would be awesome for sure, yet I’m hoping for city local device download ;)

You know what would be funny is that it’s your System Preferences > Network connections being messed up or bridged to a Wi-Fi connection or you iOS device being paired for data.

Apple took their sweet time! I photographed a Google Street View and a TOM TOM street view car parked at a hotel in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 28, 2012 when I was staying there overnight.

it uses different wifi signals...

what bugs me, is @ work, Google says I'm in Toronto,
because that's where our work head office it, even though I'm way out west!
AND, you can't change it manually!
