In my area Apple maps work just fine and I use Siri integration a lot, so they remain my first choice.

I find google is too in my face about wanting me to log, something I have no intention of doing

I like the integration of Apple maps, but I've had too many problems with accuracy to use it over google maps. Maybe in a year or so I'll see if Apple maps has improved its data to the point where it is usable in most places, but for now I will be using google maps.

...and night mode, traffic showing while navigating, multiple stop capabilities, being able to search for POI along or near the route, etc. There are plenty of missing features.

It's also missing speed limit and speedometer info.

----------

Google Maps is better, more features, and for most people, it's more accurate. There are some people who say Apple Maps is just as accurate, or even more accurate, but it seems like its definitely more accurate for most people, including myself. I will say though, that I still do like Apple Maps a lot, but it has given me bad directions a few times. Apple Maps has a lot of potential though. For me, Google Maps is my primary navigation system, but I'm keeping my eye out for improvements to Apple Maps.

For my iPhone 4...

Apple Maps
-no turn by turn
-no Flyover

Google Maps
-turn by turn with voice navigation
-Street View
-Transit
-Offline maps (coming soon)

Yea. I think there's a clear winner

Apple maps is illegible (poor colour/background choices and disregard for standard road colours on UK maps) & unreliable (frequently inaccurate, completely wrong, as well as missing basic POIs such as stations etc let alone businesses) in the UK. It also doesn't have street view and flyover mode is useless to me in terms of coverage & function. In fact it has nothing to recommend it at all.

Comparatively, Google maps is simply much better in every respect.

Google map is always the preferred one over apple map. Apple maps were too confusing during the initial time. But now, after getting used to it, it seems ok.

The only problem for me with Apple maps is the colour scheme

Everything blends into the background as there is too much white

and the lack of proper road colouring

motorways = blue
a-roads = green

Apple Maps hasn't let me down yet and I prefer its turn-by-turn and aesthetics over Google's.

That said, I would have no problem switching to Google Maps should the need ever arise.

I agree with this 100%.

I got hammered in another forum suggesting such. Oh well

Apple Maps suck so badly. I wouldn't trust Apple Maps to find my own arse hole.

Soo many jokes about your arsehole, soo little time :D

Apple maps is pretty accurate where we are, google maps has our street wrong. I never rely on just one, its nice to be able to compare them.

Tried Google Maps to navigate home yesterday, about 80 miles:
  • Hate the pronunciation of road/place names...very off-putting
  • The roundabout symbol is always the same. It doesn't show you layout of the roundabout and which turn to take
  • Bitmaps take longer to download than vector graphics

However:
  • Apple Maps doesn't have the amount of POIs that Google Maps has
  • The colour scheme on Apple Maps is very poor, making it hard to tell where your route is going

With Apple Maps I do like the fact that only the road nemes you are going to pass are on the map. Keeps it nice and clear.

Is it just me who prefers Apple Maps?!? I personally think it is way better than Google Maps. I've had problems in the past with Google Maps where it took me to places that weren't there. The layout of Apple Maps, the construction/accident icons and details, turn by turn with the streets listed on both the right and left, among other things are stand outs to me. I tried google maps today (new app). It is ok but it isn't as good as Apple Maps. Is it just me?

Apple Maps destroys Google Maps and any rational person can see this. Launch both and use both to navigate at the same time. Apple maps is by far the better app.

Google Maps isn't all its cracked up to be...

I will admit that Apple Maps was very frustrating upon first release. I have never gotten wrong directions before - mainly frustrated in regards to POI search. It seemed Google was much better at producing relevant or ANY results, where as at first launch Apple only returned matches if they were a 100% match (not very good when you are unsure of a name or place).

However, this is where Apple Maps has steadily improved since its launch in iOS 6, and they now show related or relevant results that don't always 100% match the search (in a good way). So much so that Apple Maps has performed better than Google Maps in a few POI requests. When I went to Santacon in NYC this past weekend and had no idea where the "Pier 84" starting meetup was I found one such instance that supports this. Wanting to try out Google Maps I searched for it - and wasn't really given a clearcut answer to where it was.

Comically, I switched to Apple maps, searched the same entry, and got an exact and much more clearcut result. See below:

As you can see, Google brought up "Pier 84 Supply Co". I was unsure if that was where the Pier was located, and later discovered that Google Maps had the pier labeled as a "Dog Park". If you look at Apple Maps result for the same search, it comes up with a much better answer and correctly has the pier labeled and noted as Pier 84 park.

I then used Apple Maps to navigate me to the destination. It did so flawlessly and it was the first time I have relied on it 100% for turn by turn directions to get me to a place I was unfamiliar with (rather than simply testing it out on release). I was very impressed, especially with the lock screen integration where it turned on the screen when directions are being given temporarily even when its locked so you can see the turn and save battery life.

As such, I will definitely be using Apple Maps as my default mapping service. Hopefully I won't run into any problems, but if I do, I can just check Google quick. I would rather use Apple Maps though going forward for the improved integration and to make it better/more accurate. Not to mention, I'm not exactly a "fan" of the new Google Maps UI. I don't like how the names for the pins show up at the bottom now instead of on the pin, and to operate the app is a bit cumbersome.

Can anyone say Google MapGate? I think Eric Schmidt needs to slow his role and shut his mouth, haha.

You should try Apple maps outside of US, then you'll be convinced of the errors. In my country (and many others), Apple maps is flawed in numerous folds including: location and absence of POIs, accuracy of POIs searches, satellite imagery and lack of transit.

Google maps is very good in my country. All the POIs I looked for are at their exact location. Report the POI error you stated, and Google will fix it within 2 weeks.

That made me lol. I respect your opinion but can't see how Apple Maps destroys Google Maps ... and "launch both and use both to navigate at the same time" isn't a reason.

I think Apple Maps will eventually iron out and be OK. Glad Google released their maps though.

It's really the POI lacking in Apple Maps that gets me the most. I don't drive as of now living in SF. But zooming in very close with Apple Maps, the amount of businesses lacking existence compared to what Google has data on is astounding. Every single business is listed in Google Maps vs. Apple Maps pathetic amount. I live within 400 feet of 6 restaurants. Google shows them all, Apple shows 1.

The voice technology that Google has developed in their recent apps is really impressive too. Siri's voice sounds pretty terrible now.

Just my two cents :).

My biggest gripe with google maps is thusly. They definitely rushed it through the gates to get it out as soon as possible, and that is understandable. However, it is quite laggy. It's not a total deal breaker, but it doesn't need to be that laggy on my 4s. My biggest gripe, however; is no contact integration. I'm not sure why they thought it was a good idea not to include that. I don't have a google account and don't see why I should sync my contacts just to use google maps.

The only reason it's on my phone still is for transportation directions. I use the bus system a lot at school and it really is the greatest and easiest to use transportation app. That being said, I input my directions on apple maps still and let it open in google maps. I don't like the interface of google's mapping system at all.

Apple maps is very flawed. The POI system is not quite there yet but they are working with that. If they get information from foursquare it will be even better.

Besides their POIs, however; Apple maps has been solid for me. It has gotten me around New York City with no problem, it has gotten me around Washington D.C. with no problem. It get's me to where I need to go, and the turn by turn is excellent. It's integration with SIRI makes it that much more useful too. I will not be switching to Google's maps anytime soon, and I think once Apple fixes most of these bugs, other people will stop using Google maps on their iPhones as well.
