9to5Mac claims Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller told a fan that the uber-popular photography app Instagram "jumped the shark" after it launched an Android version.

Schiller recently deleted his Instagram account and a 9to5Mac reader noticed this and asked why he had deleted it.

In a direct message, Schiller reportedly replied:
It "jumped the shark" when it went to Android
Instagram's Android app launched two weeks ago and the app was previously picked as the iPhone App of the Year in 2011. Instagram was just purchased by Facebook for $1 billion.

Update: As noted in an update to the original post, one individual was able to contact Schiller about his comment and received a response clarifying his feelings on Instagram's evolution.
Instagram is a great app and community. That hasn't changed.

But one of the things I really liked about Instagram was that it was a small community of early adopters sharing their photographs.

Now that it has [grown] much larger the signal to noise ratio is different.

That isn't necessarily good or bad, it's just not what I originally had fun with.

I don't blame him. Instagram is trash now. All I see is pictures of people's food and shoes all day.

Oh boo-hoo. They're just out to make money like you, Phil.

Just make a better device and don't worry about the rest. You're already doing a great job. Keep it up!

Note: I'm not an Instagram user. "Oh look ugly filters on square photos...awesome. I'm such a good photographer now!"

Will The Verge post some thing about how this proof that Apple is a bunch of classists?

Sounds just a tiny bit pretentious and elitist to me. It's a social network for pictures. The more people it has, the better, right?

Not sure I understand this one.

Perhaps he meant to say that it was cool when it was a small group of dedicated photographers, but now it's grown so large that all you see is random meaningless stuff?

Dunno. If so, he should have said that. This just looks weird, petty, and un-Apple-like.

Kind of out-of-character.

Have nothing against Android users specifically getting Instagram. But its unfortunate that even more people have access to ugly hipster photo effects.

I have no idea what this even means. Many users have both iOS and Android devices. Do they take better pictures when they use iOS? Are people who own iOS exclusively better photographers?

I don't know what this means, but I prefer using Camera+. I don't have to crop all my photographs and their filters and much better IMO.

No. You could really see some cool pictures on Instagram when it first came out. Now you have to filter through mounds of garbage to see good pics.

flickr explore is what instagram used to be for me.

What does "jumped the shark" mean?

From the wiki :

Jumping the shark is an idiom created by Jon Hein that is used to describe the moment in the evolution of a television show when it begins a decline in quality that is beyond recovery.

What does "jumped the shark" mean?

It is a reference to the series "Happy Days", where there is an episode where Fonzie jumps a shark on water skis. It is said that the quality of the show went down from there.

"Jump The Shark" is actually now a registered trademark, after the website jumptheshark.com was bought out by an entertainment company. The owners went to start a new site called bonethefish.com, so many people have migrated to saying "Bone the Fish".

It more specifically refers to a stunt. It's a reference to the Fonz jumping sharks on water skis during a Happy Days episode.

Doesn't make sense

This doesn't make sense to me, there are other popular apps on other platforms that he probably uses. Why to single out this app.

how childish ...

and people need to stop calling everything "jumped the shark"

Exactly. Wasn't that term used for when a TV show was in decline so they pull some ridiculous stunt to keep viewership? Kind of the equivalent of "nuking the fridge" in movie-speak.

What's the issue with the app having an android version? Did he expect it being exclusive to iOS? I don't see the reason unless Apple paid for an exclusivity deal.

If it didn't jump the shark when it went to Android, it sure as hell did when Facebook bought it.
