they don't need original content per se, what they need is to get the rights to produce content for something that is already an established "brand"

Not many original ideas coming from Apple leadership these days. Seems like they are late to the party again if they are really considering this.

It saddens me to say, but these days, Apple reacts to markets rather than creating them.

Could this be the point when they stretch themselves too thin? I kinda miss the Apple that was so heavily focused on great software being paired with great hardware. Do they really need to become their own picture studio now?
Likely they would just license and distribute like Netflix & Amazon and leave the production up to the creatives.

If Apple is going to start paying for exclusive content as part of some subscription TV service I get it. But if they're thinking of becoming production studio or doing stuff in house I think it's a big mistake. What does Eddy Cue know about creating TV shows? I don't even think Netflix produces stuff in house do they?
Friends was produced by Warner Brothers and sold to NBC to distribute it. Most networks don't produce their content in house. Netflix & Amazon are distributors, not content producers. Apple is likely to follow the same path.

Nah. Original content is where it's at. We don't need anymore Marvel & DC branded television shows or spinoffs of The Walking Dead.

i'd say other than the beginning years working primarily on PCs, i'd say nearly all of apple's biggest successes were reactions to the markets. there's only so many strokes of mad genius to be had when the rest of the industry has essentially adopted your business model and throws features and customizations at fragmented lines of their own devices.

that's like the old 1M monkeys and 1M typewriters phenomenon. certainly innovation happens there in ways apple hasn't thought of, so it certainly can appear like they're behind in some areas. now they innovate in subtler ways, like the apple pencil blowing wacoms jaggy lines and latency out of the water. or the staggered battery construction in the 2015 macbook.

it's a footrace now. there may not be another giant, crowd-pleasing innovation in consumer tech until VR or some unforeseen disruption takes a stab at shaking everything up. it's not just apple: the whole mobile/PC industry may be seeing an advanced stage of stagnation before anyone ever expected it. things are moving kinda slowly and 'catching-up' is not.

I hope they get Ficarra and Requa to develop something.

What's wrong with Apple? Apple TV is a hardware. How can a hardware company go into the business of making content? What advantage it will give them? And making it exclusive for iTunes and Apple TV? Definitely the Apple management is smoking something on a regular basis.

You serious? You don't see how creating exclusive content can boost hardware sales and keep people within an ecosystem?

One big hurdle for them will be data caps on comcast accounts. I love the idea of using iTunes for all my media consumption, but 300GB per month is going to kill that idea for me.

There were MP3 players before iPod and "smart" phones before iPhone. Are you suggesting that Amazon and Netflix are it and no one else should bother entering this space? Or Apple shouldn't because they didn't think of Netflix before Netflix?

it's not like Tim and Phil are going to put their heads together and pump out scripts, right? all they'd need is to hire (pilfer?) talented writers and producers and let them do their thing under the Apple brand name.

They should have been working on this 3 years ago, they're a bit late to the game. Certainly they have the reach to make a dent, but they're way behind on this stuff. It's not going to be easy for them to get people to give up Netflix or Amazon Prime at this point (many people will have to make that choice instead of subscribing to everything).

Original programming is good for folks like Netflix, but I'm not so sure about Apple. They should probably stick to their core constituencies.

I think Apple is still barking up the wrong tree with a TV "bundle." I, like many others, cut the damn cord because I was tired of wasting money on "100 channels of crap." I want to individually pick only the networks I want to watch. End of story.

That's not my point.
They are just venturing on too many things and that compromise the quality of their current products. Yes that incudes iOS devices too.
Yeah the team that works on Apple TV is venturing way out of their field by working on the future of Apple TV.

Here's the thing. Apple now has over 1 billion active devices. I'm not sure how many active iTunes accounts that is but its for sure hundreds of millions. It makes sense for Apple to be thinking how they can monetize this user base (and hopefully keep them as Apple customers), especially if hardware upgrade cycles are getting longer. I might not be buying Apple devices as often but I'm still giving them money for other things like Apple Music, subscription TV service, etc. and I'm sure Wall Street would like it because it's a more predictable revenue stream. Honestly I'd love it if Apple turned their devices into a subscription service similar to the iPhone upgrade program. I'd totally pay a monthly fee to "rent" my devices (with the option to own outright) and get a new one every year or two.
