So the new iPhone will be $198.99 instead of $199? How much actual savings is this.
The advantage is that the ugly labels wouldn't have to be there. Even if it would cost Apple less to make the iPhone, they wouldn't lower the price unless it were a lot less.

Hmm, this could be both good and bad. Good because I'm sure purists will like having less text on their phones. Bad because if the display of the phone or the phone itself dies, it could be difficult to verify the IMEI (average user won't care, but tech support worker will!)

It's printed on the SIM card tray.

It's printed on the SIM card tray.

It uses to be printed on the SIM tray. From the 5 upwards it's on the back of the phone.

Printing it on the SIM tray was always slightly strange. It was the only bit of the phone that could easily be changed; so presenting a different physical IMEI (in the case of stolen phones) was easy.

I have cause to check a phone's IMEI during my work. There's plenty of iPhones floating around all with the same IMEI on their SIM tray. When you look them up that IMEI's been checked 100's of times. There's some factory churning them out and they're all stamped with same IMEI.

What planet are these two politicians on where they believe making something cheaper to make means the manufacture will pass on the saving to us lowly customers?!

iPhone 4 was the most fragile iPhone design.
Not true in my experience.
It had glass on both sides which shattered too easily.

It was bulky, blocky and heavy.

It had sharp edges that didn't feel nice in your hand.

Gorgeous design. And pretty durable, compared to the easily scratched and dinged iPhone 5S. I carried both models for a total of 2+ years, without a case on them. Dropped them plenty. Never had a broken screen, or so much as a noticeable ding or scratch. My original 5 was scratched to Hell within a week, after I tripped and dropped it the first time. I've had to put a case on it and the 5S ever since. The 4/4S weighed about the same as its predecessors, and about .8 oz more than the 5/5S.

As the OP said, it is the most beautiful phone Apple ever made. And by and large the most durable.

The article made it sound like the savings would be passed onto the consumer. But I don't see what savings. Your response has nothing to do with cost savings. I understand the advantage of not having an extra label.

No savings. This is a govt/regulatory discussion.

That's exactly my point, yet they make it sound like there will be any for a consumer.

Good to see our elected officials are focussing on the important issues of the day. /s

Bulky? Dude, back in 2010 it was razor-thin. By your logic, everything made before 14/7/2014 is old and ugly.

No. I would say in terms of ergonomics, the iPhone 3G/3GS was a better design than the 4/4S.

I believe they're already buried deep in General > About > Legal > Regulatory

Mine only shows the second and third line from your picture. My iPhone 4 doesn't have the logos on it. It's a US, Verizon phone. Is there something strange here? I once got a Pet Shop Boys CD that was suppose to be the album "Introspective", and was labeled as such, but the recording was an Anne Murray Christmas album.

Totally disagree. While one might think that the rounded edges of the 3/3GS were more ergonomic, when actually holding the phone to type or talk on a call, the sharper corners of the 4/4S offer a more secure grip, and less prone to the phone slipping from my grip.

While I don't have a 3GS anymore to compare I do have a Samsung S4 test phone with rounded corners, and it definitely doesn't feel as secure to hold in my hand as the iPhone 4 test phone I have.

The same planet where they refer to this measure as "relief for job creators." Yeah, I know Apple has been desperate to hire more engineers but they just couldn't manage before -- now they'll be jumping to add staff.

Oh, politics.......
