I was referring to the price overlap. At the current prices a base M2 Max Mac Studio would be less expensive than a specced out M2 Pro Mac Mini... which makes no sense. I'd rather Apple eliminate the 32gb option for the Studio than increase the base model price.
Well, agreed to a point.
Base model Studio M1 Max, 32/512 = $1799
Maxed out Mini M2 Pro, 32/512 = $1829.
So it's essentially $30 more to swap the M1 Max, 2 USB-C ports, SD Card and larger form factor, for an M2 Pro and smaller form factor.
Arguably the M2 Pro (more CPU less GPU) is faster than the M1 Max (less CPU more GPU) except in GPU-intensive tasks, so it's really a question of what they do with the M2 versions of the Studio to compare apples to apples (which I believe is what you're alluding to anyway).
I think it makes *some* sense. It makes a little more sense when you see that you can have either the 12-core M2 Pro with 16GB or the 10-core M2 Pro with 32GB for significantly less, and it's only the combination of the two that is more. Not to completely negate your point. I agree it's a bit weird that that particular combination is more than the base Studio, assuming that if they release the M2 Studio versions they keep the corresponding pricing the same.
I think if they change anything they should reduce the highest mini pricing by even just $50, rather than lose the 32GB option on the Studio. Not that I particularly care personally as I'm not in the market for either, but if I was, I know I'd prefer to have the option.
(The machines I really don't understand are the 13" M2 MacBook Pro, and the weird array of iPads but those are different topics of course).
