I think we're getting to the point now where wireless headphones are good enough to replace wired ones for most people.

Not even close. Wired headphones sound way better than any Bluetooth I've heard.

You do realize that you lose a ton of sound quality when you go wireless, right?

Would buyers be less resistant to the idea if Apple included a both a splitter adapter (charging/3.5mm jack) and a pair of Bluetooth Earpods in the box with their next iPhone?

Here's an interesting exchange from another discussion forum:

------------------------------------------
- The 3.5 jack is from the 1800’s!

- Not quite true, the predecessors of the 3,5 started in the 19th century, the 3,5 came much later. And so what? The predecessor of today’s cars are from the 19th century, too…

- The point is that 3.5mm uses analog data – a standard that is long on it’s way out. TVs have stopped using analog in most countries due to it’s limitations, and it’s easy to see why with the huge cutback on quality of video and audio. Using a Lightning port for headphones allows audio to be delivered digitally, so the sound quality is actually very close to being called lossless – and closely matching the quality that the music is initially recorded in the studio before being hugely chopped down to accommodate the quality limits of 320kbps mp3 files.

If this turns out to be true, I'm pretty sure that - coincidentally- Beats will have a huge selection of Lightning-wired headphones in stores.

Mo' money for Apple - independently of what customers want (I, personally, want non-proprietary ports and thick-enough batteries).

do you wanna charge? or do you wanna listen to Apple Music?
I do both at the same time. I have an ancient griffin cable for the 30pin (+ the Lightning adapter) that does that. I just ordered the iTrip AUX with lighting connector. I say good riddance to that enormous 70’s tech waste of space that is the headphone jack (Mostly air! How ridiculous is that?), never used the thing on my last 2 iPhones. Please Apple, don't listen to the Luddites and kill this abomination.

Just MADNESS. This is hilarious at this point.

Can everyone just stop and agree that humans do not hear digitally? Somewhere along the chain, the sound MUST be converted to analog for it to actually... You know... Make a sound.

Moving that conversion out of the phone is simply waving a white flag and saying that they couldn't design a way to do it IN the phone.

High resolution audio can and DOES travel through 3.5mm jacks. It does it in plenty of other phones even! It is as simple as Apple using a better DAC... Which they haven't done up until now because iTunes doesn't have the infrastructure to support it (most likely because record labels want to charge $20 for high res albums). This is the same reason the AppleTV doesn't support 4K. It is a niche that they haven't jumped on board with yet.

The 3.5mm jack has never been holding the sound quality back... Just the DAC inside the phone.

Does anyone have any idea how many analog cables are used in the studios that record that high resolution audio?

I am not attacking you, but I will not be buying one. I just left ios recently. I have NEVER had a 3.5mm headphone jack go out in my life and I am in my 60's, the thing that goes out quicker is the mechanical home button and if the headphone jack is trash the home button is far worse.

I had 2 iphones go out and neither was the headphone jack.
Completely agree: So far, two home buttons and one 30-pin connector out of order on my iOS devices; never a problem with a headphone jack.

BTW: A broken unique port turns your device into a paperweight.

Surely some of you heard about Neil Young's Pono?

192k 24bit lossless audio that travels to your ears through... A headphone jack?! What wizardry is this?

Until humans advance to the point they can decode a digital stream directly, comments like this will remain ridiculous.

Darn Luddites with their analog ears. Indeed.

Presumably this would mean that Macs will be getting lightning ports too so you can use the new headphones with them.

Therefore every step along the chain must be analog too.

Wouldn't bother me, I've never penetrated the hole in my 6S+, same goes for my 6 Plus.

Jaybirds ftw.

That said, not fussed about it getting thinner, chalk me up as someone who actually prefers the extra heft of the 6S+ over the 6+. Sincerely. Feels more substantial.

Oh Noooooooooooo... my £3.99 headphones won't work with my £700 phone.

You underestimate people and their headphones. My pairs easily add up to more than the cost of a phone and I'm pretty tame.

You won't see me buying a pair of headphones that can't plug into my $10,000 camera's sound mixer. Or my Tascam field recorder. Or my high resolution sound card.

Bring it Apple. Forget these naysayers. Do what you do best. Can't wait for the iPhone 7.

Haha they always make the phone thicker just so they can make it thinner agian. Same with the iPads. At this point who cares. To me it's just a sign they have hit a wall when it comes to thinness

If they did this, I will ditch the iPhone in favour of another device. Having just spent $400 on a set of headphones. This would piss me off royally.

I hope this is all ******** but I just see the end of Apple as my choice of phone.

Bollocks to this.

Bollocks. Audiophiles rarely use wireless connections but hey....just alienate a chunk of people.
