I love this movie and when it was first released in theaters, it was amazing! This and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen were just amazing! If this is to succeed, they need Gilliam on board as creative director at the very least.

That's it? Apple has just given up on producing any kind of original content?

I don't know if its strictly a "money grab." How old is the film? 30 or 35 years?

Most younger folks have probably never seen it. And sc-fi is all the rage. The little Millenniums will eat it up.

This could be really great if they do a good job.
Mine was just a quote from the movie ("Mom... Dad... it's evil! don't touch it!"). I have no problem if they do a good job with it.

Just reminded of Hitch Hikers Guide. There are several versions and they all work. The Books, the radio plays, the TV series and the film. All a bit different but all work.

Edit. And all had the author on board (expect for one where he was probably there in spirit but was pushing it before the etherial plane). And there was a computer game.

That’s just your imagination talking.
Apple has always been driven by greed.
They are not an altruistic company that tucks you in at night.
You can go back to the beginning days of iTunes and see the same negative comments.

How right you are. But back then given the quality of Apple's products it was easy to overlook.

I understand the appeal of the original movie. The adults saw the satire, same as Holy Grail and Life of Brian. The kids caught the zaniness, the antics of the bandits. But what really caught my attention as a child sitting in the theater during the premiere was the map itself. What else did that map show? Where could you go? Anywhere.

That is what the series should cover. They don't have to include anyone from the original movie, they just have to have the map. Maybe Kevin will find his polaroid image of it as an adult and go on some adventures? Maybe his kids will find it after he "disappears", Flynn-style, and go off in search of him?

For the folks who are aghast at the idea of a cherished, perfect movie that encapsulates a particular time in their life getting remade, I get you. Really, I do. The Star Wars prilogy walked across our psyches (and I wasn't even a fanboy of the originals). Blues Brothers 2000 - lets not even go there, and right now we get the paper-thin facsimile of MacGyver. What are the chances that a Time Bandits series isn't going to suck? Not much, I'm afraid. It could turn out a steaming pile of crap, like the Librarians. But as was mentioned earlier - Stranger Things? Did someone manage to absolutely nail early-80s midwest America? Yes they did.

So, take heart in the fact that Apple has a huge war chest full of capital and wants IP that will produce dividends, ignore the fact that its run by a bean counter with a social agenda, and hope that maybe the idea I posted up above is the way it goes. Or maybe come up with your own idea to hope for and post it here so we can have something positive to talk about.

Apple can't make a decent "pro" product, and now they want to sink money into spinning off Time Bandits?? No, just no.

If there's any film that naturally would lend itself to a long form adaptation, this is it. Just hope they can capture the anarchic satirical spirit of the original. It's really one of a kind.

12 Monkeys is a favourite film of mine, and I didn't really see how it could be adapted into a TV show so I've steered clear. I hear they did a decent job with it though.

So we get it, Apple can do nothing right.

Even before releasing their first series, it’s already a “cynical money-grab”.

Why don’t you all just ignore it then and go to SamsungRumors to see what they are doing?

And don’t reply with “but the Mac mini”, because nobody was buying it before and nobody will be buying it now, and has nothing to do with this section of Apple.

I simply asked a question. You are leaping to conclusions in assuming I think Apple can do nothing right and that I believe they are "grabbing money" as you put it.

Relax.

Saw this in the theater when I was about 5 years old. HATED this steaming pile of crap. (Most early 80's movies were crap actually.)

Not sure why everyone is so upset by this, Gilliam is on board and this is a really good movie that could easily be moved over to a good series. With one-off adventures through time, or even a continuing storyline with a time traveling villain, mixing in sporadic one-off episodes to break things up a bit. I'd watch for sure.

One reason may be that there are few, if any, TV series derived from movies that are worth watching.

The fact that Gilliam is on board is good but it appears to be an "executive" role which likely means (perversely) that he'll have no "executive" powers - in particular, little ability to veto stuff he doesn't like.

I'm speculating that he's sold off the TV rights for a large sum of money in order to finance other stuff that he really is interested in (or, given that he's in his late seventies, he may just want the money for himself and is family). Who knows?
