What's the problem exactly? If that's what they do for all devices then surely there's nothing wrong here, except highlighting Apple's bizarre secrecy? I mean who knew there would be a new iPhone this year.

From the article: "As noted by several observers, the iPhone 6 approval was the first time a specific device was named in a Tweet by the NBTC secretary, making it an obvious deviation from usual practice. "

So Thailand DOESN'T do this for all devices. In fact, they've never done it before at all. That's the problem; Apple was not granted the same level of secrecy any other company is afforded during this process. Making the information public and making it easily and widely known are two different things. Basement, disused lavatory, beware of lion and whatnot. :)

I can see them, however, delaying the release of the iPhone 6s in Thailand long enough to prevent similar disclosures in the next release cycle.

And the Thai officials would give a damn about that, because...? Not selling iPhones hurts one, and only one party: Apple.

----------

I'm sure Apple isn't going to make the same mistake twice. Next year Thailand gets their iPhones later than the rest of the world, unless the Thai officials admit their mistake and promise to stop being stupid.

Again, why would anyone except Apple be hurt by this?

Parts Leaks: Enough to build a working 4.7.....Not a single piece from 5.5.

You don't pay attention much on here if you believe that.

I'd love it if Apple got rid of the numbering for phone. They've done it with iPad, now do it with iPhone.

Not really. They just changed it. What do you think the new iPad Mini will be called? It'll be iPad Mini Retina 2. They didn't get rid of numbers, they just delayed adding a number for one year by changing the name.

There was never an iPad 3. There was never an iPad with Retina Display 2. They haven't numbered iPad Minis ever. I think it's safe to say they stopped numbering iPads.

Dear Lord, you people are putting this out there like there needs to be Punishment from On High for displeasing the Almighty.

Holy *******. This really is a religion for a lot of you.

Hah, *you* are the one projecting religious connotations on to my comments. I have no particular thoughts on that except that it sounds generally silly to me.

I was talking in terms of what I thought was a good business strategy for Apple. Obviously they have been very successful with generating anticipation and attention for each product release and the secrecy, leading to a big launch presentation seems to be an important part of that. So, they want to maintain that secrecy as much as possible. A "punishment" for Thailand sends a message to everyone that Apple is serious about secrecy and that small government officials may get more trouble than they want if they use their position to break it. However, I don't think they want to be seen as trying to bully state governments. Thailand by itself isn't a huge deal to Apple on way or another, but if Apple is seen as trying to push governments around, the backlash certainly *can* hurt Apple.

Anyway: No religion. No blind allegiance to Apple. Just thinking about business strategy. Is that so hard to understand?

Does it mean that there will be no more 4" iPhones? Please, I don't want it to be any bigger, unless the so-called 4.7" phone's screen is edge-to-edge, in another words, not any larger than iPhone 5 in physical size. A phone any larger is TERRIBLY ugly in the pocket!!! Please, Apple!!!!!

The motivation is not to hurt anyone.

Apple wants to control what they reveal and when. they want to be the ones showing the world there are two new iPhones (which may or may not be called iPhone 6). Someone with authority telling they have insider information about future iPhone models hurts Apple, they want to prevent this in the future.

Can't people just keep their mouths shut and let Apple go about its business? Seriously, these rumors are stupid, and are just used to entertain people.

I'd say Apple's followup clarification revealed more than the initial statement from the Thai officials. We already had a good idea that there were two phones. This is the first credible clue that the iPhone naming convention is changing.

Why? Does your computer motherboard grow in size if you plug it into a bigger display?

Maybe he's implying that with more internal space, they would be able to spread out the components more, resulting in a physically larger logic board.

My bet is that they were warning Mr Loose Lips not to reveal the name of the iWatch.

You may be right in a way. I have been wondering what the point of a "chat" would be if he already spilled the beans, but he might have more information that he hasn't said anything about yet, and they're telling him to keep his mouth shut from now on.

NEW iPad Mini and then iPad Mini Air? Just like iPad 2 -> New iPad (3 and 4) -> iPad Air

First tangible leak of Mac Pro was 5 days before Apple revealed it to the world. Per that logic, "there is no new Mac Pro" would still be fitting for about 2X more days too. Then BAM! There was Apple springing it on us all.

iWatch has not had a single part so "there is no iWatch". No, there is an iWatch. Why? Because, "it's different" or "it's manufactured here" (where, apparently, we believe that Americans shun personal attention and/or can't be bribed to anonymously reveal blurry photos of parts).

You guys are hilarious.

Once again, I go back to the money. Include a 5.5" iPhone model and soak up the customers who will not buy a 4.7" iPhone because they want a bigger screen. Bigger screens do sell as proven by the Android crowd. Is Apple smart enough to get that money or will Apple choose to leave it for the likes of Samsung and others for up to another year? If you think the latter, why would Apple refuse to take that money?

Bloomberg & WSJ have reported 2 sizes- one of which includes a 5.5". We just had a protruding lens part that simultaneously "can't be for the 4.7 or existing iPhones" while "there have been no parts leaks for the 5.5". So to which phone does that protruding lens attach? Strategy for the latter group: just ignore that part and continue spinning "no parts leaks" because even "1 part leak" tremendously weakens that argument point.

From our perspective, 4.7" is a BIG jump and 5.5" is gargantuan. However, our Android counterparts are accustomed to Android phones at 6" and larger. To them, a 5.5" iPhone might seem small and a 4.7" might seem much too small. THAT's who would be prime candidates for a 5.5" iPhone. Or will Apple let their money stay with Samsung, LG and others?

Most of us like to think that we know Apple very well and what moves they should or will take in the future. The truth is far from that.

Last year we all drew conclusions that the purpose of the iPhone 5C was to penetrate the Asian markets by offering a more affordable iPhone. We ended up scratching our heads with a "huh? why did they do that?" when Apple announced it was only $100 cheaper.

Does Apple need to sell a larger screen iPhone? yes. In order to compete with other phones.

Does Apple need to sell a 5.5" iPhone? I'm not too sure.

If the 5.5 inch is not real, why does it matter that much?

The 4.7 inch won't be a disappointment to anyone. I mean, people have complained about Apple not keeping up with iPhone sizes and now that they are actually making a 4.7 inch (Which is relatively normal in the phone market these days) people are complaining there might not be a 5.5 inch. I just, gahh.

Apple made the iPad Mini and the iPad Mini is almost as small like those huge Samsung phablets out there the only down side is that you can't make calls. Why not just get a Mini?

Even if there won't be any 5.5 inch, Apple will make a new killer flagship iPhone and if 4.7 is not enough for you, then you should seek some other company.

It will be a huge disappointment to me. Even the 5.5" is starting to feel borderline small, but I'd be willing to get that nevertheless. The 4.7" is just pathetic.

EDIT: Also, if you think that the iPad Mini is in any way similar to size than a Galaxy Note, you must have been smoking too much tørrfisk... You can fit three Notes on the screen of an iPad Mini.

Samsung's about to release their flagship "pathetic" phone, Galaxy Alpha 4.7".

Exactly. a 4.7" iPhone is large enough to draw people back to Apple. It's not like everyone is running around with Galaxy Notes. Even Samsung started releasing a Galaxy mini for those who don't even want a phone as large as 4.7" or 5.0

----------

If you look at the statistics below the most popular size smartphone is still under 5" in screen size. Yet another reason why I don't think Apple would go with a 5.5". There just isn't enough demand for it.

This is "genuine democracy" in action. Since the coup in May it has been illegal to criticise the military regime. They have also written retroactive protection against prosecution into the constitution. Presumably this applies to the iPhone 6 as well as to the removal of a democratically elected government.
