Great news - other than I hope there is full feature parity, and of course that these apps get updates.

Final Cut Pro is simply not compatible with the macOS version which is completely ridiculous. Even if there has to be a watered down "iPad Project", you should be able to open the same library/project across platforms.

The same thing happened for years with iWork on the iPad.

Apple owns all the tech here. They want developers to do this but don't hold themselves to the same standards.

I changed the app icon cause of this
Yeah, me too. I always thought the stock icon was a little bland, even on the earlier versions.

I don't know anything about app development but considering Macs and iPads use the same chip architecture now and the two OSes share so much... this shouldn't be hard at all, right? I would think Apple's main concern would be "can we devote resources to keep the apps updated and adding new features" I guess?
Yes, unified codebases have been supported in Xcode since late 2022 with Multiplatform Targets. Developers still need to make tweaks to account for API differences, OS behavior, and obviously user interface. But they would not need to maintain two completely separate codebases unless there was a technical reason for it.

This is good news as it's difficult to cal the iPad Pro "Pro" when so few pro apps are available for it.

Personally I think MainStage would be great as I use the iPad Pro as a tone generator/ sound module for playing keyboard along side Korg Module and other software synthesizers.

You can develop an iPad app and it can work on MacOS, but MacOS apps can't work on iPadOS. Since most pro apps are developed for MacOS, this is why there are few pro apps available for iPad ... sadly.

We are seeing a slow convergence of the OSes so I'm hoping one day it will be more unified and I'll be able to do my daily driving on an iPad Pro, including Xcode. :)

All of these apps discontinued due to lack of traction with users. Not for Apple's lack of trying. There are plenty of apps that receive zero updates, but still have millions of users using them.

I do not believe Aperture was discontinued for lack of traction.

Instead, I believe Apple did "a courageous decision" of "merging" Aperture to Photos. Unfortunately the merge was never completed due to perception of audience skill levels being different — many of the Aperture features ended up in there, but unfortunately the workflow and UI for managing large photoshoot output never got there. I hope apple would add some kind of opt-in "pro mode" to Photos to fix this.

Interesting given recent speculation in Affinity circles that their iPad apps will be EOL'ed.

Do we have any Afiinity iPad users in this thread?

Though Procreate still seems to be going strong on the iPad, but it's a much more natural case there with the Apple Pencil.

I’m here for Pixelmator Pro. It would be nice if the iPad Pro Photos app got the extra editing features of the Mac version as well. I know Apple doesn’t like to fragment its core apps but it’s silly the Mac gets better editing options (curves etc) than a ‘Pro’ iPad.

All of these apps were replaced with far-better 1st party alternatives
Take the L. You asked which apps Apple left in the dust.

Name one app that Apple has left in the cobwebs.

Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW)
MacApp
HyperCard
iBooks Author
MacPaint
Apple Media Tool
DVD Studio Pro
iPhoto for iOS
Cards for iOS

And that's just from the top of my head.

And according to this excellent site:
  • Books
  • Calendar
  • Clock
  • Home
  • Maps
  • News
  • Numbers
  • Pages
  • Podcasts
  • Reminders
  • Shortcuts
  • Stocks
  • Voice Memos
Though that's from June. Perhaps Apple has fixed most of the current bugs and worked on that list afterwards.

I just checked the App Store and you can download version 3.7 of Pixelmator Pro. I don't know if this has been available before, but it now shows that it's Apple software. The latest version I had previously was 3.6.4.

I haven’t had to use it in ages, but I’m sure I used to be able to queue and run multiple format outputs as a batch. Do you mean shared across machines, Backburner-style?
Yeah right now you can share between multiple computers but it would be good to utilize the Silicon iPads too.

Uh-oh… Sounds like more additions to Apples ‘release and don’t update category’
I sure hope that's not the case for Pixelmator. I don't think Apple with mothball it. They only recently acquired it, they don't have anything comparable and they do need something. But it's true that they have done very little with it thus far (nothing at all on the Mac side - just bug fixes). But I hope this means that they are working on a major revamp.

I missed my chance to buy Pixelmator Pro at a Discount years ago, hopefully they won’t switch to a subscription model
I bought it for my 2012 cMP with Big Sur. One of those machines that's sorta frozen in time but still does everything I want so doesn't need to be upgraded.

Not hating on new kit but with considerations such as children, mortgages, retirement saving...etc I can't justify forking out for heaps of subscriptions and incremental upgrades.
