"The menu will only appear if a user's iPhone is signed into the same Apple ID they used to enroll in Apple's Developer Program"

That doesn't tell us anything. iPhones are logged into two Apple IDs: one for app-store purchases and some other functions, and one for iCloud. They may be the same, but they may not. Which one are they talking about?

The Apple ID is an embarrassing mess, compounded by Apple's petty refusal to let people consolidate them.

Why does Apple charge developers $99 per year? That is a hurdle for a kid that just creates an app for fun, which could generate a lot of money for Apple.
You don't have to join the developer program to create apps for your own purposes. There's enough junk in the app store without letting everybody on the planet pile more in there, free of charge.

I don’t see this as an issue, as it is what supposed to be anyway. Apple simply closed down a loophole. People can wait for public betas if they want to, emphasize on the word public.

Meanwhile, as usual, personally I would wait for .2 of the actual release anyway. I mean look at iOS 15, and 16 was not any better. My phone is a tool, so I don’t have time for buggy OS. I never understand people who jumped on betas or even GM releases and then complain about something breaking. 🤷‍♂️

As a registered and paying developer since 2008…. I can say with complete confidence that this is a stupid and petty move that will only delay the discovery of countless bugs and slow the development of iOS and any other affected equipment. It’s just a stupid stupid strategy that makes absolutely no sense what so ever.
Are the people using the developer builds but not part of the program able to send bugs to Apple using Feedback Assistant and get a reply or ignored?

The amount of people defending Apple for this here is a bit odd to me. It’s one thing to not care, but it’s another to take to a forum and actively defend the decision to prevent Apple fans (often kids who aren’t paying for developer accounts) from getting beta software one month earlier.
Bingo! Apple already has a public beta. This is about nothing more than money and, most importantly to Apple, secrecy. It is much easier to, ahem, discourage, public descriptions of bugs when your actual name and money is tied to accessing the beta.

I thought you could consolidate them, assuming there’s no credits left? CMIIW.

What is really annoying is that Apple doesn’t simply allow multiple iCloud accounts on one device. On Android, I can use however many Google accounts on one device, and I can switch them around easily.

There’s still Public betas. Besides, this was the actual intention anyway. People who had access to developer builds for free today are doing it through a loophole, not officially. Apple simply closed down that loophole. Public betas will still be available.

Nope, you still can’t combine AppleIDs.

I have a developer account, but the AppleID is the one I use for App Store/iTunes purchases, not my main AppleID. I wonder if this feature knows this, because if it only looks at the primary ID, this would break my ability to get beta updates. Not everyone has only one AppleID, as I would guess many would who have accounts predating MobileMe.

I’m fairly sure Apple will have a separate login for it since many people have company AppleID’s for their developer accounts while using a personal AppleID for everything else. But I’m not 100% sure.

There are very few reasons for a non-developer to use a beta, I assume this has been done mostly to cut down on support requests from people who don't know what they're doing.
TBH I am a developer and I have very little reason to use the betas.

iOS 17 is gonna be such a minor update just like iOS 16 apart from Lock Screen changes we have had nothing for 2 years, it’s upsetting 10 years and same look. I think the whole beta thing isn’t worth it anymore, seeing as iOS 17 is just a minor bug fix update why does it even need 3 months of beta testing?
Im hoping for a reintroduction of skeuomorphic apps and settings.

When I look at the quality of iOS/iPadOS releases, the thing I’ve been thinking for a long time is we need to discourage people from testing beta releases and finding exceptionally rare bugs and glitches. I would also axe public betas entirely. If you want access to next-gen Apple technologies, you pay the $99.

Each breathe of air should also be taxed. LONG LIVE 'MURICAAA

Still waiting for the day that Apple will allow users to do full IPSW downloads to directly to their device rather than through iTunes/Finder. Would save so much time!

The dev betas that follow WWDC don’t get public betas until about a month later (usually around beta 3), but otherwise it’s just a day at most.
Yes you're right about the first 1-2 Betas, but these really shouldn't go in the hands of the Public. It's not meant for a daily driver, it's meant for a Dev to test all their apps to plan what work is needed to do during the next 2-3 months (or to assume the malfunctions are just bugs and report them).

'illegally' 🤣 You actually think apple would take someone with a beta running to court and charge them for it? The police would laugh at them. Stop drinking the kool aid. this isn't stolen hardware, it's software freely available online that costs 0.
Individual "local" copyright infringement is quite dubious (e.g. is the act of downloading copying? loading from the disk? how about the install?).

But a site hosting firmwares or profile images against non-disclosure agreements has little argument with which to say they aren't promoting widespread copyright infringement, for better or worse. I suspect that is why betaprofiles.com shut down - because they knew they couldn't win that legal fight.
