Correct.

The Fortune 500 covers America's largest corporations.

Fortune provides a list of the world's largest corporations called the Global 500. Last year's list can be found right here.

I was only light heartedly pointing out that Macrumors original post referred to "Fortune today released its 2010 list of Fortune 500 companies, ranking the world's largest companies by revenues".

Jobs is happy.

Plus, the majority of his fortune comes from his ownership of Disney stock. His Apple holdings are quite paltry.

That's something I wasn't aware of. I recall reading that Jobs takes 1 dollar a year salary with Apple but I thought he had significant stock in Apple. Regardless, I think he's worth a few bob...:D

Come on, nobody can be perfectly happy managing the 178th (add or take 20) largest company in the world! :)

Apple ranked third behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell according to revenue.

pretty amazing considering the number of products apple manufactures compared to HP (printers, etc, in addition to computers) and Dell.

Microsoft is 36.

And on this very site, an article stating PC's make up only a piddly 91.98% of the market
(25.0 + 23.4 + 15.6 + 8.6 + 19.3 = 91.9%) while Apple makes up a very commanding 8.0% of the market.

:D Man, Apple's going to reverse those #s by the next quarter mark my words!

where does Dell rank?:D

apple will be there soon......

I believe Dell is ahead of Apple in the rankings. While linking to what Michael Dell said in 1997 is funny I would be careful to think that Apple is a company that won't ever falter. Things change quickly in technology and even more so in technology + fashion/cool side of things. Remember the RAZR? Most people wouldn't be caught dead with one now.

So for some perspective, Apple's entire operation is trumped by Windows and Office.

It's only been, what, 26 years since the "1984" ads debuted. Geesh! Some people are so quick to rush to judgement! Apple's a newbie at computers and is going to reverse the 91.9% next quarter. Have some patience, man! It's coming! :D

First quarter 2010:
PC: 25.0 + 23.4 + 15.6 + 8.6 + 19.3 = 91.9%
Apple: 8%

Second quarter 2010 (all numbers aprox.):
PC: 0%
Apple: 100%

Although it is common to read that Jobs is the "largest individual shareholder" he is in fact the largest shareholder period.

Wow. 15.6% profit. If the insurance industry produced that kind of underwriting profit the regulators would step in and say no more fun for you.

True. The FTC have the teeth of guppies.

Revenue does not equal profit

Companies like Dell and HP move a lot of product, but don't even come close to having the profit margins Apple has.

Balance that out with the market cap, which is a measurement of the total worth of a company:

Apple: 225 Billion
HP: 127 Billion
Dell: 33 Billion

Very impressive. Good for stock holders. However the world is Windows.

Fortune is lazy

Hellooo, anybody at home?!

Apple abandoned subscription accounting last fall and restated all their past quarters. Restated revenue for calendar 2009 was much higher than $36 billion, closer to $47 billion. [1]

A business magazine like Forbes should know that, especially after Jobs put a giant "$50 billion dollar company" on the wall during his presentation in January.

But that's okay, I guess. Apple's jump up the ladder will only be bigger next year.

i quoted it just for fun. i would be silly to hold michael dell resonsible for a quote that is 12 years old. todays apple is very different from apple then.

Correction. Four of the top ten (nos. 2, 3, 5, and 7) are United States companies.

The US has 140 out of the top 500. Second goes to Japan at 68. The UK has 26 out of 500.

Not saying that you are wrong necessarily, but can we have a source for this information.
