If you go not really that far back, there are those ads trying to poach Windows users to the MacOS land. IIRC, they even had ads about how easy it is to switch, with details like Office also working on Macs, and a plethora of alternative Mac software that one uses on Windows.

I just meant that I thought we had seen the last of any major company making native Windows software. Google definitely won’t, only Chrome since it’s their own platform.

Hmm, I'm all for people having choice, but is it really that bad to use ATV+ through a web browser (and I guess by extension, any other streaming service)? Granted, they still don't have Searching via browser last I checked (back in June), but I was able to get by just fine.

If one wanted to load music onto their iPod Classic, should we still find an installation of iTunes, or would Apple Music replace that? If folks have suggestions for 3rd party programs, do tell!
You lose offline playback with the website and it only supports TV+, so no way to watch any channels you’ve subscribed to.

Because people have always had the choice to choose Macs. It was not Apple's responsibility to make Windows users happy. 😝
Aren't iPhone sales like 8:1 to Mac-sales? What about iPhone-users using Windows? "For Apple to win, Microsoft doesn't have to lose", 'member?

So what is the implication for local iOS device management ie. backups and iOS installations/updates/restores? Is iTunes being deprecated? Is this functionality being relocated to the Music application? Or will iTunes stick around and continue to be updated separately for this purpose?
Hopefully the latter. Who uses the Windows App store anyway!?
Would be sad to see the best AAC-encoder (via qaac) being locked away in some app.

The issue with having a video streaming service offering HD, 4K, through a browser is simply accumulated cache and correlated significantly rising processes that consume RAM and cpu processing significantly.

We already see this in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox along with Brave as well - just depends how many tabs auto laid on restart, cached data storage taken up and RAM storage preloaded being already limited. Even if you mean a hidden browser it’ll add up soon enough.

More concerned or worried that this will allow other offerings to future screw around with menu/playback/control UI unsightly and downright frustrating Ui interfaces. Amazon Prime and YouTube are the common disposables.

yeah I'd expect a press release on this
Frankly if Microsoft did work on these apps I see that as a potentially good thing.

Apple absolutely SUCKS at writing Windows software. We've seen this again and again. If Apple just gave API information to Microsoft and let them write the apps, we might end up with something usable on Windows.

Completely irrelevant. If Apple doesn't care about making Windows users happy, then don't sell a product claiming to be compatible with Windows.

Is it real native apps or just Electron apps? If really natives, what language/toolkits Apple used on Windows, as their standard SwiftUI doesn’t run on Windows?

Apple Music would replace iTunes.
Will it, though?

There's no word whether that Apple Music app for Windows is equivalent to the Apple Music app for Mac, i.e. including the ability to buy and download music, to manage it locally, and to use it to sync and manage Apple devices..

It could as well be just a pure streaming app like Apple Music for Android or the Apple Music app for Xbox.

Finally working towards getting rid of iTunes I hope.

I've been using Cider for awhile now instead, this might sherlock it for me though it probably won't look as good.
iTunes is so awful on Windows. No matter if it’s a $300 or $3,000 computer, it’s so sluggish. I really don’t like it. It has all my entertainment though.

*yawn* wake me up when they bring the Weather app to Windows.

(JK, this is neat and I like to see this kind of cross-functionality. I'm sure there will be some kinks to iron out, but I'm all for it!)

It's about time. I really don't understand how they've gotten away with selling "cloud services" that are marketed as being compatible with what is ultimately the most widely used OS on the planet, yet provide such an crappy experience on that platform. It's not rocket science and they should have just hired some developers to crank these apps out YEARS ago. If Apple's goal is to get people to switch from Windows to MacOS, providing a subpar experience with their software on the Windows platform isn't the way to do it.

Last time I checked, Android was the most used OS in the world. Followed by iOS and then Windows. If you’re strictly talking desktops and laptops, then yes I would agree Windows is the most used. However, there are more phone and tablet users now than any form of PC.

Why would Microsoft be announcing these apps instead of Apple?
Have a feeling this is a prelude to more partnership between MS and Apple as seen on their blog under "Making your everyday easier with Windows 11". I wonder if this will maybe lead to Windows for ARM being available for AS Macs or other software ports directed to the Mac they wish to market.

Hmm, not much details on the iCloud Photos integration. Will it just download everything locally, stream things, or do an optimized storage style of integration?

They should fix the desktop Music app before porting it to other systems or even creating a new app from scratch. The current Apple Music app for Mac is by far the crappiest app from Apple I've ever used. Even the Electron-based apps from Spotify and Tidal are miles better than AM.

Could be a possibility. Apple and Microsoft haven't stopped their working relationship, just some bantering now and again. I'm wondering if development was farther along, then Microsoft decided to make Windows 10.5 into 11 and they made some changes. Apple could've been swimming in code, plus they're still struggling with Apple Music on macOS and keeping it functional.

I think this is great.

This is good news. But to be honest I’d rather hear news that Apple are to make a decent customisable parametric EQ available in apple music on iOS.

Or release metadata to Roon for Apple Music
