Incorrect. Unsigned, small time indie artists cannot upload directly and sell directly through Apple's iTunes. To work directly through Apple, without first going through an aggregator, you need to meet certain requirements like: Have at least 20 albums in your catalog, have UPCs/EANs/JANs for everything you're going to distribute, along with ISRCs for all songs you're planning to sell.

It's impossible for a "bedroom artist" to meet those requirements, so they go through an Apple-approved aggregator like TuneCore or CDBaby.

Under TuneCore, it costs $10 a year per single/ringtone to distribute. $50 for an album to be displayed on the iTunes Store every year. You get 100% royalties, so after Apple's cut you're left with 70 cents per song and $7 per album.

Under CDBaby, it costs $15 (one time) per song/ringtone. $60 (one time) per album. You get 91% royalties, so about 60 cents per song and $6.50 per album.

---The new thing people are mentioning is perhaps Apple will not require aggregators that take away from some artists. Perhaps the fees will be less. Also, bedroom artists not signing to a label either will basically make a bunch of profit as opposed to signing and being pressured to tour endlessly to make the label back their money they put into them. It's more of a direct-to-consumer way of business. No middleman.

By upload I meant simply be able to get your music on Itunes without going through a label which is what those guys were talking about. I think most people know you can't directly upload to Itunes like it's Youtube or something. I was aware there were aggregator middle men because I have plenty of people I know who are unsigned bedroom artists who have their music on Itunes. I dont think we're talking about aggregators who are available to everyone but labels who are not accessible to everyone.

Itunes requires aggregators to provide filters for technical, regulatory, and other requirements that labels usually do for signed artists. I know. Which is why I dont see a very big reason for Apple to change this relationship.

The point was that there was never really a barrier there that Apple Music took down. Unsigned bedroom artists have been able to get their music on Itunes for years after they produce and promote it themselves all without the help of a label.

The posts I was responding to were referring to the need of major or indie labels being taken away by Apple Music. Like I said, you already dont need a label to produce, promote and get your music onto Itunes. Alot of unsigned bedroom artist have their music on Itunes. Accessibility for those unable or unwilling to work with a label which seemed to be the focal point of those guys' posts isn't really an issue nor something that really has changed with Apple Music, which was my point.

you can watch it for free with apple music. (which is free at the moment)

Why is it behind a subscriber pay wall at all? I've never even heard of someone charging money to watch a music video. Is that even a thing??

I even roll my eyes a bit when there's an ad before one - since it basically IS an ad. This one even more so, since the entire plot revolves around Eminem and Dre syncing their Apple watches :p sigh

Pretty lame that Apple is charging you $1.99 to watch a freaking music video. A music video that is essentially a 7-minute ad for Apple Watch, iPhone and Apple Music -- not to mention Eminem's album.

you can watch it for free with apple music. (which is free at the moment)

Or you can do what I will. Not watch it at all.

Been a while since I have paid attention to eminem, is he over his anti-corporate phase? Sellout *cough*....

Your post is light hearted right?

Tight integration? Siri only plays 5% of the music I ask even though the music exists in Apple Music and Siri confirms "now playing...." and nothing actually happens.
Yea I'm having the exact same problems as well. I search for a song I know is on apple music yet all it does it keep going to the front page and doesn't do anything.

I'm totally confused as to why beats 1 cannot be a DAB digital radio station as well? I mean it's great on a phone or laptop etc but it's a shame that radios in cars have mostly been replaced by DAB and apple doesn't cater to the market that actually listens to radio at least in the UK is one of the only places the format works

I feel like apple car is to far away and not adopted to push the radio service in the very place they need to be. I know it's supposed to be a Spotify replacement but the beats1 side is much more a traditional radio station.

I personally think they're missing the point of putting such expensive content up to miss the very people who Casually listen in cars, and commercial premises like cafes, bars, restaurants etc

No. They want you to spend time in the Music app where you might subscribe to Apple music.

Beats1 is quite good, but every time they say "Apple music" it sounds cold. I'm starting to think they should have kept the Beats name; it's warmer and more friendly.

Where in the new Apple Music app can you catch up on these Beats 1 interviews, shows, podcasts if you didn't catch them live ?
Also, why is there no "add to wishlist" button in Beats 1 radio?

I listen to a great song on Apple's radio on an Apple device and I can't just press a button to add it to my wishlist from where Apple gets a cut from the sale?

How did this get through testing and nobody noticed this?
Or is this intentional? In that case... Wow.

Why can't it be an FM channel? They'd have to buy existing stations or open airwaves every 50 km or so worldwide. They'd have to pay to power those stations worldwide. They'd have to pay for broadcast antennas worldwide and then maintain them worldwide. Finally there's no standard for digital radio worldwide and DAB audio quality is absolute garbage. MP2 at 256 Kbps is not something that would pass their quality control.

Re: Apple Music

Where is the 'couldn't give a f-' button? Trying to avoid this type of smarmy self-promotion and 'exclusive collaboration' is producing a back-of-the-bus sick feeling.

Same here. At the moment I solve this by visiting the playlist one day after and like or add the songs.

I must say, the name Apple Music sucks.

I dislike the new naming convention Apple Watch etc. It's so bland, so corporate and betrays a poverty of imagination at Apple. Apple only called Apple TV Apple TV because they couldn't use iTV due to the TV broadcaster ITV in the UK.

And so far, 'Apple anything' is serving as a byword for mediocrity or failure. The Apple TV is a neglected hobby. The Apple Watch is a pointless niche failure. Apple Music has created pandemonium in its sorry short life, applying DRM at will to iTunes Match tracks.

Uh... Both the Apple Watch and Apple TV print money, how is either a failure? The Apple TV is regularly updated with more content and has had a price drop; other than it's lack of Amazon Prime, it's the best product on the market.

I screencap the thing, I just can't be bothered.
I'll add it to a Spotify playlist later that works as a kind of second wish list. (also with full "previews" so to say)

Whoever has taken over responsibility for user experience in the vertical integration aspect should be fired.
This is by far not the first major neglection.

Well... Eminem gets a Colbert bump, and now suddenly the Apple offers come in. That young man might have a career ahead of him, if he can catch a few more breaks. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/stephen-colbert-eminem-michigan-public-access
If only he had talent.... His 5 minutes were up about 10 years ago.

I'm really not digging Beats1 either. Maybe it's because I'm not the target demo (urban music) as I could care less about Dr. Dre, Eminem, etc. I also could care less about the artists or what they like or don't like.

Finding a schedule or even what is playing is nonexistent and the whole thing just seems to be a mess and Apple trying to resurrect a dying format, FM Radio.

I haven't yet upgraded since the Beats app is still working fine for me. I live in Miami, FL where we don't have a contemporary FM rock station. Does Beats 1 not play new rock?
