That’s awesome! I stand corrected. Hopefully people who donate to the overall effort will do it from this page, since these are the only donations Spotify will match

They did an initial donation and will in addition double the donations raised by its fundraiser page up to $10m

Maybe amazon music, YouTube, Tidal and others will join in, if they haven’t already.

I did some additional research and it seems that every other streaming service is on board but Apple. I hope they will join soon.

Spotify could also help out artists by increasing their royalty rates closer to Apple’s

I‘m not sure why you‘re bringing this up in this context? I just wanted to inform you that other streaming services aren‘t as inactive as you suggested. I‘m not here to judge or rate their efforts or their general business models. Royalties are a complex topic and the actual payout to an artist depends on its label and distributor and their contracts with a streaming service. Spotify‘s and Apple‘s numbers are not that far apart. IIRC in 2019 the numbers where $0,0045 and $0,0064.

If you choose your streaming service by the average royalty rates per stream you have to switch to Napster ($0,02).

Well I brought up royalty rates because if we’re going to talk about how much “good” any particular streaming company is doing for artists, it’s meaningful, imo.

Also valid would be observations about companies who file lawsuits to keep from having to increase royalty rates to, for example, songwriters and music publishers.

In any case, paid subscriptions accounted for about $6 billion in 2019 (RIAA). Apple Music and Spotify together account for about two-thirds of that.

Point being, that’s awesome Spotify is throwing $10-20 million at artists, but increasing their payouts could be a billion+ dollar increase. That’s per year, every year—not throwing a bone at them as a one-off.
