Taylor Swift is making her entire back catalog of music available across all major streaming services, bringing Apple Music's exclusive content deal with the singer to an end (via TechCrunch).

Beginning today, rival services including Spotify, Amazon Music, and Tidal will all be able to list the artist's existing discography, including Swift's album "1989", which has sold 10 million copies worldwide, it was also announced on Friday.

The move potentially marks a change in the way artists see streaming services, which have previously been criticized for underpaying content creators. With Spotify boasting 50 million paid subscribers and Apple Music now on 27 million, the sheer number of listeners appears to be making up for the decline in physical album sales.

Swift famously got into a spat with Spotify in 2014 because her music was available on the service's free ad-supported tier. The singer said at the time: "I think there should be an inherent value placed on art," contrasting it with how on "Beats Music and Rhapsody you have to pay for a premium package in order to access my albums. And that places a perception of value on what I've created."

At the center of the split was Spotify's refusal to let any music only appear on its paid tier and not its ad-supported tier, which led Swift to pull almost all her music from the service.

Swift later berated Apple Music, when the service initially declined to pay royalties to artists if their music was played during the free three-month trial of the service. Apple later reversed course and agreed to pay artists for the free plays, leading to better relations with Swift, who went on to become a promotional figure for the service in several ads and even an exclusive concert film.

Do people still care about these scientifically illiterate people without any purpose for the next generation?

Artists which are only focused on money should be permanently banned from their jobs!

lol every artist is focused on money...

Because our society has accepted this for some reason...
It's truly sad to see the amount of money being spend on singing and throwing body parts (dancing) which has absolutely no purpose for the survival of humans. Even worse, it doesn't even contribute to our knowledge and understand of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, the universe.............

I think it's great that it's not exclusive anymore. She's very popular and I think it sucks when an artist has an album exclusive. Her album is available on Google Play Music as well.

Also, an artist deserves to be paid. You'd want to be paid too. The childish insults get annoying.

There is more to life than survival.

People will trade money for things they need AND want. If want more money, give more people what they want or need. (Being jealous won't change anything)

Her timing is incredibly petty (due to her rivalry with Katy Perry).

I have not heard about any rivalry between two people who look pretty, sing and only write a small portion of their music but please keep celebrity gossip off MacRumors. Some of us have to focus on more important things like Mac Hardware Rumors

This was because Katy released witness today. Taylor is one petty snake

Nope, let's just keep all this stuff on Facebook or SnapChat or whatever the kids use these days.

Probably since no one uses Apple Music.
:eek::eek::eek:lol wut?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Anyway, at a time I had contemplated dropping Apple Music because we needed Spotify for our Echo Dots and I preferred Google Play for my Android devices, the Taylor Swift exclusive did keep us tethered to Apple Music, because we have a 12 year old daughter and she and her friends have Taylor's music pretty heavily integrated into their play lists along with Kelly Clarkson's songs.

And yes, these girls are also interested in math and science and other worthy subjects. My daughter has spent the last three years being classically trained to sing opera. So having a love of chilling to fluffy music does not equate to being an airhead.

I'm very strict about what the younger kids listen to under my roof and I find her music preferable to most of the explicit junk being marketed to my kids.

A world where every endeavour has to contribute to the sciences somehow might be a more productive one, but it's not a world I would care to be in.

Her obviously forced, marketing-driven innocence has worn off, so her true self can finally emerge into a world where everyone will stoop to any level without care. Petty timed releases due to some "rivalry", a performer first and artist second...

Interesting music / tech service news, but not about anyone interesting. Just another skip on Spotify shuffle now. Should I say, "blank space"? Get it?! Eh, I tried.

Exactly. But it's karma for Katy for the past when she aligned her releases with Britney and Gaga.
Katy never aligned her releases with anyone. In fact she went out of her way not to release when Gaga released and tbqh Gaga was bullying Katy saying they felt sorry for Katy Perry and it backfired as ArtPop was a spectacular flop.

No worries, I'm sure Apple will shake it off.

(come on, someone had to...)

Now we've got bad blood. :p

Who needs culture when we can live in the Matrix, eh? And why should people have any interests besides yours? After all, since you've been selected to decide what everyone should value as art, interests, etc. we need your guidance on these matters. Any thoughts on how people should dress, or what religion, if any, they are allowed to have without running afoul of your utopia?

I'll agree to a point and also throw in other forms of entertainment like movies, television, and sports. While all have their redeeming qualities and at least to some extent provide intellectual and physical stimulation that humans can use to better themselves, the sheer amount of money spent pursuing idle activities is both staggering and depressing. The celebrity worship of people like Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, LeBron James, Tom Brady, and others results in an inefficient waste of resources.

Humans have used music and song as a communication method for thousands of years and sport has provided a way for humans to build their physical strength and agility to prepare for battle. The difference now is that a majority of the effort and money spent on either is for idle spectating as opposed to participation. How many people do you know that have picked up a football and played a game against another team since maybe high school. The closest 99.9% of the population comes to playing football is a quick game of touch at a family reunion, yet millions will pump billions of dollars into the NFL money-making machine.

I'm not against entertainment at all, but as a society our priorities have gotten out of whack. The arts are a very important aspect of human existence as they allow us to appreciate beauty in life. Life is about more than simply being alive, humans intrinsically want the order of pleasing sounds and visuals. However, we are raising generation after generation of narcissists who care about nothing other than themselves and their entertainment. The average person would rather sit glued to their TV all weekend rather than do anything that would be beneficial to society as a whole.
