I'll agree to a point and also throw in other forms of entertainment like movies, television, and sports. While all have their redeeming qualities and at least to some extent provide intellectual and physical stimulation that humans can use to better themselves, the sheer amount of money spent pursuing idle activities is both staggering and depressing. The celebrity worship of people like Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, LeBron James, Tom Brady, and others results in an inefficient waste of resources.
Humans have used music and song as a communication method for thousands of years and sport has provided a way for humans to build their physical strength and agility to prepare for battle. The difference now is that a majority of the effort and money spent on either is for idle spectating as opposed to participation. How many people do you know that have picked up a football and played a game against another team since maybe high school. The closest 99.9% of the population comes to playing football is a quick game of touch at a family reunion, yet millions will pump billions of dollars into the NFL money-making machine.
I'm not against entertainment at all, but as a society our priorities have gotten out of whack. The arts are a very important aspect of human existence as they allow us to appreciate beauty in life. Life is about more than simply being alive, humans intrinsically want the order of pleasing sounds and visuals. However, we are raising generation after generation of narcissists who care about nothing other than themselves and their entertainment. The average person would rather sit glued to their TV all weekend rather than do anything that would be beneficial to society as a whole.
