Spotify works better between my apple devices than Apple Music does.

So true. Spotify Connect is leaps and bounds ahead of Apple Music. I can seamlessly switch audio between my MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad, Sony TV, and Xbox One, or Airplay it to my Apple TV. Doesn't even miss a beat and always remembers where I left off or what was last playing.

It's hard to bet against Apple in this space. They have the hardware/software advantage for services of any kind. They can also subsidize services profitability with hardware revenue although they haven't had to do that yet (and may never have to). Will investors bet big on Spotify which doesn't turn a profit and whose sole business model is to sell music at a profit margin that the rights holders want more of?

I'm not betting on Spotify to die, but I think Apple will win the profitability war easily even if they don't win the subscriber war.

Technically Spotify has more of a hardware advantage, considering they can run on virtually any hardware (Playstations, computers, tvs, etc etc). Apple Music is more restricted.

Do music-streaming services let you cache a few hours of content? It'd be nice to be able to download a configurable number of hours of music while at home and then listen to it on-the-go without using data. It'd also be good for going hiking, camping, or boating in areas without data coverage.

Not for long, according to the article.

I enjoy Apple Music - I don't think Spotify is better enough for me to care (if it even is, I had both for awhile and found it gave inferior music recommendations), and I have an LTE watch and I ordered a HomePod, which aren't compatible anyway.

Which is confusing to me why people rush to purchase products and services that only work with each other?

*shrug* I turned 54 a few days ago.

I am very much interested in what's new music wise.
And no, I don't mean the latest "urban", "Rock" or whatever Apple is pushing.

So, never assume… you know.

Happy Birthday! :)

It's a confusing article. It touts (via a WSJ article you can't read without a subscription) that Apple is going to eclipse Spotify in the US, and states what Apple Music's US subscriber base is, but then goes on to state what Spotify's WORLDWIDE subscriber base is (which is much higher than Apple). If they're going to make a prediction, give us ALL the information so we can decide!

Yes. I know Apple Music does, and I think Spotify does also.

Yeah but when you download with apple music you are still using data. Unless they finally updated that. Spotify just uses what available storage is on your device and does not use any data whatsoever when a playlist is downloaded.
That to me is the biggest reason I will stay subscribed to Spotify. If I would do a switch it would be to Google's music service because you can truely download your playlist. Not just place it into the cloud in which you are still using data to listen to a "downloaded" playlist.

Spotify has the advantage of attracting people who feel strong about manufacturers from any side, while it limits the potential amount of customers on Apple's side as many have either irrational emotions towards companies or valid reasons to avoid them. But either way, it looks like Apple Music is working out quite well for Apple, It certainly will not destroy Spotify but also can't be ignored as a driving force in streaming/music services.

Spotify lets users discover other users playlists. Apple has curated playlists, which are boring an don't change often. Spotify has a much better system for music discovery. Another thing I hate about apple music is playing an artist station. It cycles through a few artists or albums with no variety. Spotify on the other hand plays much more artists when playing an artists station.

Spotify is going to remain dominant for the simple reason that it's cross platform compatible with better apps and works in desktop browser. Apple Music has crappy apps on other platforms, no desktop browser support and requires iTunes malware.

The way Spotify works with my many devices (mac, iOS, Echo, smart tv, etc.) far outweighs Apple's offerings. I also think that iTunes is an absolute mess. I am also an unusually big fan of a dark screen vs. light. Apple's entire ui seems to be based on blasting my face with off shades of white and yellow.

Spotify is the clear winner in my experience.

Yeah but when you download with apple music you are still using data.

I live in New York and am often underground (in the subway) without cellular reception. Albums or playlists downloaded require no data to play. The only thing that might is the album artwork, which I have seen occasionally not load.

I don’t know how when Apple Music is baked into most Apple hardware such as the iPhone. Maybe your use case is different, I just find Apple Music to be much easier, if I want to use Siri to select a song or playlist it works well.

Can you give some arguments to such statement (particularly define 'every') or should we take your word for granted?

It's called an opinion. Sort of like "best fried chicken in town", etc. So you may disagree and have your opinion (and can state what you find is superior), but otherwise it seems like you just want to argue.

Google Play Music is the solution for our household, primarily for the free YouTube Red subscription. No ads on YouTube is key when the kids watch Blippi, lol.
