I knew The Beatles and Nirvana would be in the top 10 but Lauryn Hill at #1? Doing something like this - where you take all popular music from the 50s to today and rank it just seems so subjective as to be completely meaningless.

I used to think lists like this mattered in some way, and would argue about them with my friends. Much like I used to think the Academy Awards mattered in some way.

These lists don't matter. Like what you like. No lists such as this represents anything of any consequence outside of the organization that promotes it trying to sell you something 😉

Rather than using these lists as confirmation bias or getting mad over what’s on or not on it, folks should use it as an opportunity to discover some music they've never listened to before. I discovered Aja thanks to this list and plan on listening to some others, including Lauryn Hill. Hell, I’m no Swifty, but I was listening to 1989 the other day to see what some of her deeper cuts were instead of just the stuff you always hear on the radio.

if they put Thriller on the number 2 spot i would like everybody to realize that the number one spot was stolen because these day's an album like Thriller would be too much of a risk to come out as the winner. This is embarrassing calling this a "modern evaluation" or in other words a subjective selection process involving a biased group of people without objective data.

I can't imagine what would go wrong when making a best album list without using objective metrics.

Music tastes are inherently subjective. There’s really no way to be objective unless you start only looking at technicals like ‘fastest rap verse’, ‘longest guitar solo’, ‘most albums sold’ which rather ignores the point of music in the first place which is to stir emotion and bring enjoyment. You don’t have to agree with the list, that’s perfectly fine. But it doesn’t make sense to pretend you have some definitive list that is objectively better, because that’s not possible.
