The notification is not new. The way they are showing you the notifications is what is new.

" it appears that you can't specify exactly which artists you want notifications from."

What nonsense. I cannot believe how Apple is so oblivious to what people want. Or more likely, they don't care. Yet another example of how Apple is becoming less relevant by the day to discerning consumers.

What a half assed way to give us a simple long overdue feature.
Let us get notifications for new releases based on artist or record label.
And un bury the All New Releases page.
And increase number of Recent Added releases on home page.
everything feels buried in Apple Music i hate it.
Such a terrible music experience.
Everything you say is 100% correct. Apple is so tone deaf to what people want. This long time subscriber ditched Apple Music for good recently. They could operate a decent service if they actually gave a damn about the user experience but they clearly don't. So long Apple Music. I don't miss you, nor do I miss iPhone or iCloud or Apple Photos. Such wasted potential.

Ok ok, that’s fine even if useless for me as I get infos regarding new releases through other ways, and not only of my favorite artists.
My main concern is the absence of the name of the album when listening my music on my iPhone. It seems to me a more essential info than this notifications although I understand their economic pertinence.

Just in time for Pearl Jam to release their new album, Gigaton, tomorrow.

Did you get notified and did you pre-add the album?

Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia came out today, I had it pre-added and didn't get notified.

Has anyone been receiving new release notifications since enabling this feature? Also, I understand Apple would be rolling out this feature over time, but it seems like almost everyone I talk to has to manually enable it as the splash screen has yet to prompt anyone.
