I have 3 worries:
All 5 majors have signed up, so Apple MUST have closed some of the DRM loopholes. I hope not too many to hurt potential sales.
Will there be offerings in a high enough bitrate to entice audiophiles?
Many of the best music consumers have obscure tastes, so I would echo the thoughts on Indie music labels.

I don't think apple would release a service that wasn't acceptable by the customers, so this better be good, because I'm planning on getting an ipod. Do you think I should wait on the new mdels or get one right now?

BTW: I'll be happy with the new service as long as I can download Metallica and chicago

One thing I worry about with a music service like this is that the idea of an album will completely dissappear. All songs will just be seen as singles -- even if they are released in bunches of 12 or 15. I find myself listening to playlists on my ipod, or just randomizing my entire song list... I sometimes wish i could be forced to just pop a whole CD (or 3 CDs in my changer) into my cd player, but it is too easy to just hit play on my iPod.

Well your vision of album-less music is still ways ways away. You'll still be free to drop $17 for a CD at your local Tower. Apple's service, even if it's hugely successful, will only represent a small small minority. Of course, if this thing really catches on, I'm sure Microsoft and Co. will follow suit.

Also, I'm sure you'll have the option to download whole albums. I can see how after you buy a couple of songs, you can have the option to download the whole album for a cost, minus what you paid for the initial songs.

I'm interested to see if they'll build in added features to iTunes so that you can view Album art and liner notes. That would make it more attractive to download an entire album as opposed to buying a CD.

If it's around $0.50 per song I would buy into it. I own a pair of nice headphones (Sennheiser HD590's) and I doubt the quality of the songs would be worth $1.00 but I could be wrong. I'll have to hear some samples.

Looking forward to it.

The samples may be a lower bitrate. I think that there should be different "editions" of ths service, where you can chose the bitrate level of the song you are downloading, perhaps on a sliding cost scale. That would be fair since a 320kbps song takes a lot more space and longer to download than a 128kbps.

What about Canadians?

I would gladly pay 50c to a dollar for a single, but it's too expensive if they price it in US dollars. With the exchange rate, it's closer to 75c or $1.50. That's getting a bit pricey for me.

Actually, 75c isn't so bad, but I wouldn't pay $1.50.

If a .mac account is required then I guess I'll have to pass. I refuse to pay $150 dollars a year for services I can get for free. On the other hand, if I can have unlimited song downloads included in my .mac subscription, then we're talking!

Is it really free? Do you have a get out of jail free card that works in real life?

Mind you, there are musicians who need to make money to
make a living. That's how they get started. If we don't pay them something, they'll never get started.

I don't quite get your point.

All I'm saying is that, with the exchange rate, it becomes a lot more expensive for us up here, than for those in the States who earn US dollars.

I used .mac for POP e-mail and web hosting. I get both of those for free now through Yahoo.ca.

I'm not going to get into a debate about intellectual property; however, paying for .mac and then downloading Apple Music Service music through .mac, is the same as paying for that music. It's between Apple and the record labels as to how to divvy up the pie.

How excited is everyone about this reported music service in the works? I'm started to be, I've tried MP3 music services before (I don't really care what the format is, "legitimate downloadable music" then) and there wasn't much stuff that I liked and the bulk of it was non-signed musicians.

Even if 12 to 14 songs (about a CD) ends up costing the same you'll still save money in the long run. If I could get a small return on each song that I don't like in my music collection I could buy another half of the amount of CD's I have.

The sooner we get news from Apple the better!
