Yes, they should go back to bars to save those 0.5 mm of space

Just tell T-mobile to change LTE sign to 4G and problem solved
Yup, they should, especially given that there's really no reason to use the dots, and plenty to use the bars.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can find the most ridiculously trivial things to complain about!

Sweating over what you consider "ridiculously trivial things" is what separates Apple from all the other phone makers. The OP is absolutely correct in being upset about this; it looks horrible. I'm not sure who has control though. Apple may have their hands tied in this case.

I think we can all agree though that the signal strength dots are change for the sake of change, and only reduce the available space. The bars, which have been used on every cell phone for the past 20 years, are perfectly readable.

Not just T-Mobile. I actually never really noticed until I saw this. It's really not a big deal lol.

My reply was in reference to the OP who was trying to act a smart-ass, when it's not down to Apple (mine says 'EE', nice and short).

Yes, but you're still not really saying anything.

Your carrier is called EE, so that's what they have set the phone to say. It's not shortened to fit.

T-Mobile has never had to shorten its name in the past.

Apple could remove it easy if they wanted too. Carriers wouldn't have a say. Just show it on the lockscreen like Android does. Mines fine as I'm on 3.

This is why I love being on Three UK the carrier logo is just the number "3" in the status bar

Surely it's the 'LTE' part which is causing the problem? If Apple changed those stupid signal blobs which rob real estate, then all would be well again.

There is nothing wrong with the dots over bars. Seriously yourself and others have to just deal with change.

The problem is T Mobile being too long not LTE... Its 3 letters it can't get much shorter. T Mobile should shorten their name, it's their choice as its a carrier issue.

I meant that the LTE is causing the problem when you have a longer carrier name and then add this onto the end. Why can it not be a symbol? Or the clock move over one pixel if the carrier name is judged to be touching it? These signal bars are *ultimately* causing the problem of course. Personally, they're childish looking. The bars looked much better IMO.

Yes but they enforce that the carrier name be listed in the status bar. You really think Apple would put it in if they had a choice?

No they do not. They certainly do not enforce it on Android. I only see carrier name on notification shade.

Yes, bro, I know Android. Do you also notice that those phones have the carrier name featured on the phone itself?

Apple doesn't allow that - therefore, the carriers require that they show the Carrier name in the status bar, bro.

And no all Android phones have carrier name on the phone itself. Why not put carrier name in notification shade

Carrier don't write the os last time I check!

Through Carrier updates, yes, they do control it. Verizon could easily change their logo to say "Not AT&T" if they wanted to. That's why it's so easy to edit the carrier title without a jailbreak, because its done through carrier settings.

Not all phones. Ignore the ceiling light reflection. And the carrier logo does not show in the status bar.

Nope nexus series just prove you wrong son!

That's also an unlocked phone. For instance, the unlocked Galaxy Nexus had no markings. The Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, however, had Verizon markings.

Phones that are bought from the carrier on their networks feature the network carrier logos in some form or fashion.

He wasn't talking about Android, he was talking about iOS.

Do you even read half the stuff you reply to.

He is taking about the reason for Apple putting carrier name is because of carrier enforcement.... At least it is my understanding.....

In a way, it is, at least for the Nationwide US Carriers it is.

All 4 of the big US carriers brand every other device with their name. Sometimes It's just the logo (Like the AT&T Logo on the back of the HTC One), but sometimes it's made well known (Verizon and AT&T often times like to put their name very big on the front of the phone at the top). All four do it. Even smaller carriers like US Cellular do it. It's a way for the phone company to have free advertising, essentially.

However, Apple specifically barred Cingular (the iPhone carrier at the time), AT&T, and especially Verizon from doing so. To compensate, the carrier was displayed on the device itself.

Think of it this way. Each version of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 has different carrier markings on the body, therefore the carrier name isn't displayed on Android. On the iPhone however, you can't look at two iPhone 5Ss and instantly tell one belongs to AT&T and the other to Sprint, so they use the carrier name in the status bar as an indicator.

Over here in the UK, none of the handsets have carrier branding. Only EE (Orange) put their name on the handsets. So Android, iOS, Windows, whatever - they only have their name in the signal box in the software.

Totally. A carrier should change its name rather than a pointless new way of displaying the signal that takes up what could be almost twice the space of the bars. Clearly a carrier changing its name is the much more realistic thing that could happen.
