I am not saying that is a huge deal, but Apple better give a damn good explanation as to why they didn't come through on this.

Why does it matter? They obviously didn't just not sell white phones on a whim. I'm sure they want your money for a white iPhone as much as you want to give it to them. The only really useful piece of information you could ask of them is the date when white iphones will be available for real.

Maybe something went wrong during production with the whites? Maybe around WWDC, Apple discovered a flaw with the white ones; cracks, over-heating, maybe something to do with the paint?

There is probably a reasonable explanation, but don't expect people to accept it.

SJ's keynote says otherwise. Listen to it again, starting at the 1:37:00 mark. He said that they would be available on the 24th, with preorders on the 15th. You can't glean 'black only' out of that.

BL.

So let's sue him and take this case to the Supreme Court.

I'm an artist, I work for a company where I paint murals. I'll be told, "Justin, you're gonna be in the location Monday."

Sunday night, I'm told "Justin, Monday's no good. Things got screwed up. We're pushing to next Wednesday."

What can I do? Yell and kick and scream at my boss? "Dammit, I made plans next Wednesday! And what about Monday? Now I have to find something to do! Argh!"

It's a part of life. Things happen. You can say something, like, say, in a keynote address. And then, well, something happens between then and, let's say, yesterday, that makes the dude who said that information in the keynote look like a liar.

But is it his fault?

For all we know, a shipment of white plastic missed the boat overseas and pushed back the production of a couple thousand iPhones a day or two, and so, while they're making them currently, they can't let you pre-order them yet, because technically they aren't ready, so better to be safe than sorry, but that doesn't mean they won't be here by the time the 24th rolls around.

I'm just saying... let's all go to bed, wake up refreshed, and see what happens in the next couple of days.

I really think you should read things before you start posting.
You said Apple doesn't owe us an explanation and I disagreed saying that they essentially promised us a certain product to preorder today and they did not fulfill that promise. I am not saying that is a huge deal, but Apple better give a damn good explanation as to why they didn't come through on this. You then said I wasn't correct saying they promised the white iPhone and now you are off on a tangent trying to change the conversation because you said something blatantly wrong.

It's 4 am.

Cut me some slack.

I'm gonna go to bed and wonder why anyone wants a dumb looking white iPhone in the first place.

:D

You really can't justify someone lying to a whole lot of people with a "come onnnnnnnn guys, no big"

no matter how many times you try and say its not a big deal, the principle about it is a big deal, I dont want to be lied to by a company I've invested a lot of money in, and just because your job involves you getting f*cked over a bunch doesnt mean it's ok for Apple to not give any warning whatsoever about not being able to preorder white

I think you need to make up your mind :p

Seriously though, it would be a big deal if Apple took your $200 for a white iPhone and then decided to make its actual release date a mystery, but it's not a big deal that Apple isn't letting you give them your money as quickly as you'd like. Take a deep breath, get on with your life, and you'll have the phone you want before you know it.

Justin is not getting the point.

We're not saying we should sue Apple, or even that they owe us a damn thing. I think i speak for most of us that just feel like it's very very bad business and really unprofessional, and downrit rude, that when the online store went up is when we suddenly found out. It's not like they just started producing these phones a couple days ago... They've been in production God knows how long. They absolutely knew, before yesterday, that the white wouldn't be going up for presale as we were all told.

Good business sense says they should have told us. Warned us somehow, no matter how bad the explanation may have been, they should have said something. It makes no sense to just piss us all off and leave us in the dark. Its asinine.

It's not like you went through the whole process of trying to order the phone only to find out, at the end, after you've given your credit card information that "OH WAIT IT'S BLACK HAHA"... it clearly stated, on the page, that the phone wasn't available. It wasn't an early warning, and maybe you didn't expect it, but to say you were left in the dark is not correct. The information was there. You had a choice... pre-order black, or wait. No pulling the wool over the sheep's eyes.

Well, I concede this thread to you, sir.

It's obvious the masses don't want to be calmed and wish to burn their self proclaimed god alive at the stake for saying falsehoods.

+1. Waiting 'til the last second only to post, "Sorry, we don't have it," is ridiculous.

It's like they figured this was just an afterthought and no one would care.

As someone who works in PR, I'd say that Apple technically followed the traditional rules of crisis management - they immediately released a statement that they would sell the white phones "as quickly as possible." The problem I'm having is that you are SUPPOSED to immediately tell your target audience as much as you know at that point and I do not believe that Apple is doing that, at all.

My prediction: last minute announcement that Apple Stores will have a limited quantity of white phones on launch day so there is pandemonium and the media will swarm all over it. "Hordes of people lined up in the hopes of getting one of the few white iPhones today..." etc. And Steve Jobs will be tenting his fingers somewhere like Mr. Burns. "Excellent."

If you've been noticing (well, it's hard not to see), one of the biggest gripes is that Apple plays as the wizard behind the curtain.

  • It took nearly four generations of iPhone three years later and a cumulative amount of Apple-bashing for Jobs to finally give a clear explanation on why there's no Flash on the iOS.
  • Not even the board or shareholders were aware of the severity of Jobs' health and liver transplant.
  • Don't even get me started on the curated App Store and their decision making process.
  • It took a leak by a haphazard Apple employee and a blog site to see what's coming down the pipe, and as Jon Stewart said, Apple 'went Minority Report on his ass.'
