Seriously if the person wants to use their data to download a large app let them. It’s their decision not yours(Apple) to make

This came about AFTER people sued Apple for not having an automatic check while downloading apps.

Because Apple can’t have it on by default and have a notification or toggle saying you can turn it off ? On Android it’s on by default but asks if you want to not use WiFi.

Yeah, that was during a time period when most people had low data caps and metered messaging and airtime.

The carriers gave up on airtime and messages at some point and unlimited data grew in popularity.

It's flipped now.

Alternatively, Apple could still offer a restriction but just raise the limit.

I say a simple toggle in setting to turn off or a notification like Android does would suffice.

I think problems like this will disappear when 5G arrives. Thruput will be so fast for even large downloads, it will no longer matter.

Yeah but why wait 3 years for something Apple can provide an option to toggle on/off right away?

4G LTE speeds are faster then a lot of WiFi networks and when I was on Verizon pre paid unlimited which gets deprioritized whenever it’s congested I have never gotten slowed down averaging around 60GB per month in usage. Speeds averaged around 40 mbps and seen 100+ in some areas consistently. Sprint is actually getting better as well and using 60GB over the 23GB threshold and speeds are around 10-20mbps at home and seen as high as 100 mbps + in other areas. Rarely have I been slowed down as well. In NYC as well so you would think I would be slowed down more but haven’t.

Well I think we‘ll see this change hopefully some day. A switch in Settings just to give the users the option would be the least of my expectations.

Let‘s also hope that the carriers start being less greedy in certain countries so that more and more people get access to affordable plans with no or almost no restrictions.

It won’t when you realize American companies aren’t the worse

I’m not sure why it’s such a drama that you have to update an app straight away instead of just waiting until you’re connected to Wi-Fi?

I would guess the majority of mobile users don’t have unlimited data.

I would argue differently.

Or if they don't, they have a higher data cap than 1 or 2GB.

But neither here nor there because if most people do not have unlimited data then they are usually on WiFi anyway and never see this restriction.

As far as waiting to connect to WiFi, well not a thing with me. I'm always on cellular. I have UD and I'm paying my carrier for it so I will use cellular data, not the WiFi I already pay my ISP for.

For those who don’t have unlimited data then it would make sense to wait until on WiFi. But a lot of people (at least in the US) have unlimited data now. And I’ll counter your question, why is it a problem for people to use the data they pay for towards updating apps if that is what they want to do?

I am not sure what this has to do with American companies - can you elaborate what you mean in more detail?

There‘s a ton of carriers in Europe and Canada that I know of with absolutely crappy data allowances - and their satisfaction is probably what Apple had in mind, initially, when settings iOS up that way.
But nothing lasts forever, so there‘s hope we see change one day.

Have you *met* the average entitled iDevice owner?

Can‘t wait to hear more about this average owner, one of maybe 50 -100 million customers the company will have this year. Please tell us more about what your demographic research can tell us - seems highly scientific! ;)

Because i don’t use public WiFi and rarely use the one at home because my data speeds is faster and don’t get slowed down ?

Part of it was a shot at American companies. We claim American carriers are bad but once you look at others we ain’t that bad. Just go look at India

America is not the entire world. Most places still have unlimited minutes and texts (useless) but limited data.

My suggestion, move to Android or raise the issue to Apple. They won’t hear you on here.

Nothing I said was a shot at American companies. I know the mobile industry well enough to know that there are way worse carriers out there than the few US giants.

It’s clear to anybody that carriers in less well developed countries often have low quality or overpriced offerings. Heck, just looking at the Canadian market makes me envy the US carriers already.

Lol, India has some of the best carriers in the world.

The customer service is top notch. Par excellence. With Airtel. And decent with Jio. All others suck though.

Pricing is essentially throwaway.

You can get Unlimited calls and text with 25 GB 4G data for USD 4 per month including all taxes. And this is with post paid. Prepaid is even cheaper.
