Apple has for a long time mentioned in the fine print that its Phones should not be used in freezing temperatures. Yet, such temperatures are a recurring phenomenon in much of the North America, Europe and many other parts of the world (Japan etc.). In practice, iPhones have also worked quite ok in the winter, just with shorter charging cycles. As they should, really, given how important phones have become in our mobile lives, no matter what's written in the small print.

Against this background, I've been dumbfounded this winter to notice that Apple's wired earpods simply DO NOT work in winter. I had no problems whatsoever with the 6S, but it seems that the lightning connector just can't cope in winter temperatures. Based on a quick search at Apple's forum, this seems to be more of a norm rather than an exception. I guess I will have to give in and buy Bluetooth earpods then, luckily there seems to be one company that makes those with replaceable batteries (not Apple). But the whole phenomenon does seem like an echo from the era of Ive-designed Mabcooks that prioritized form over function. I thought we had come past that era, but it seems to be continuing with the phones.

Oh, and if someone would know a fix to get wired lightning earpods consistently working in cold, would be much appreciated. Not having my hopes up though.

Technology has always been fickle in extreme temperatures. As we continue to push our devices to their limits, I think this will get worse until new technologies are discovered. My wife and I found that our iPhones overheated pretty quickly in Joshua Tree when it hit 120F+.

The 6s still has the 3.5mm socked. Doesn’t this work with the old earpods?

My experience is not consistent with yours. I live in Minnesota, and though our last couple of winters have as a whole been warmer than usual, we still get several days (today is one of them) where the temperature is 0 or below. I really have never had a problem with the function of my phone at this time of year, or the function of the wired earpods either. I worried that once I lost the 3.5mm jack that this would be a problem, but it hasn't turned out to be. Perhaps because I keep my phone in my front jeans pocket, where it gets the benefit of my body heat? Whatever the reason, I detect no difference in the performance of my iPhone over the various seasons.

Oh, wait, you must mean outside. Never mind.

I have noticed that winter temperatures eat the battery health really fast. My battery health was at 97% in December and now it is already at 94%.

The cold temperatures don’t do anything to the overall battery health but cause the battery to shutdown before it hits zero. It should be back to normal once it reaches optimal operating conditions.

This is my first winter with lightening connector EarPods and so far so good.

My phones and iPods have all had shortened battery life in cold weather though, even when in an inside pocket.
