Apple has for a long time mentioned in the fine print that its Phones should not be used in freezing temperatures. Yet, such temperatures are a recurring phenomenon in much of the North America, Europe and many other parts of the world (Japan etc.). In practice, iPhones have also worked quite ok in the winter, just with shorter charging cycles. As they should, really, given how important phones have become in our mobile lives, no matter what's written in the small print.
Against this background, I've been dumbfounded this winter to notice that Apple's wired earpods simply DO NOT work in winter. I had no problems whatsoever with the 6S, but it seems that the lightning connector just can't cope in winter temperatures. Based on a quick search at Apple's forum, this seems to be more of a norm rather than an exception. I guess I will have to give in and buy Bluetooth earpods then, luckily there seems to be one company that makes those with replaceable batteries (not Apple). But the whole phenomenon does seem like an echo from the era of Ive-designed Mabcooks that prioritized form over function. I thought we had come past that era, but it seems to be continuing with the phones.
Oh, and if someone would know a fix to get wired lightning earpods consistently working in cold, would be much appreciated. Not having my hopes up though.
