That’s what you think. I’m sure those who rushed out to buy those $550 AirPods Max will also be reserving/preordering an Apple Car regardless of who produces it.

No not at all, this rebranded Hyundai will appeal to those people who spent $17,000 on the solid gold Apple Watch Edition that didn't even have GPS. (no kidding, it really was $17K)

If this ever comes to fruition, it will be nothing more than a new Hyundai model with Apple badges and design. I bet Jony Ive is hard at work at his new studio working on the details

The story has been updated to say Apple are talking to other manufacturers. My guess is a company with a good reputation, but are not selling well currently due to going very bland, and so would benefit from Apple design, and have capacity to spare. My first thought is Mitsubishi.

My other thought is Geely. Electric experience with their Polestar brand, lightweight design via Lotus, and production capacity is in China where Apple have lots of experience.

But it would be fun to see something more left field: KTM. The X-Bow is ultralight, and their motorbikes have the components as tightly fitted as a MacBook.

Have a Kia Niro and I like it. Worst thing about it are some of the cheap materials used in the cabin and the atrocious KIA logo. Learned yesterday that they’re finally getting rid of that logo and replacing it with a really sleek one.

Some people obviously don’t know that the Genesis brand is part of Hyundai. Hyundai has a wide range of quality levels, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of engineering a quality product. Samsung as well has a wide range of quality levels in their products, and yet their display and storage tech seems to have the perception as the best and/or most reliable.

Any partner would have to have the ability to scale quickly and efficiently. Samsung seems to have that ability, and that’s why they continue to have a relationship with Apple. Hyundai could as well, and it probably makes sense to have the partner in that area of the world since the components would come from there anyways.

Apple is planning to work with Hyundai on the upcoming Apple Car, according to a report from Korean site Korea Economic Daily.

Apple-and-Hyundai-feature.jpg

The report suggests that Apple is in negotiations with Hyundai Motor Group to manufacture an Apple Car. Apple is said to be planning to work with Hyundai to produce electric vehicles and develop batteries due to the "enormous costs" of the technology and the necessary production facilities.

Multiple prior rumors have suggested that Apple will work with a manufacturing partner to produce the Apple Car, but until now, there hasn't been word on which manufacturer Apple might team up with. Since the report mentions "negotiations," a deal may not be established as of yet, so Apple's plans could change.

An Apple Car report earlier today from Bloomberg said that work on the project is still in the early stages and "nowhere near production stage," nor was there a mention of Hyundai. According to Bloomberg, it will be at least five to seven years before an Apple Car is ready to launch.

Update: In a statement to CNBC, Hyundai confirmed that it is in discussions with Apple. "We understand that Apple is in discussion with a variety of global automakers, including Hyundai Motor. As the discussion is at its early stage, nothing has been decided."

Apple really can’t love them talking about this. I have to wonder if they’re in the running anymore.

I have a 2019 Kia Stinger GT2. I love it. I give Kia/Hyundai/Genesis high praise for the strides they made over the last decade.
I'd agree, they both have made good strides. The Stinger is nice.

I'm not sure Apple Car would be cheap enough for the masses.
Also, imagine there is something wrong with your windscreen washer reservoir bottle, you are out of warranty and Apple tells you that you need a whole new chassis at 80% the price of a new car... ;)

I ran into that with a cell phone I owned decades ago. I finally, from the manufacturer, got the news that the reseller of that model phone 'chose to disable that function'. Oh, really? How could you let them do that? 'Resellers negotiate contract with us to outfit the phones they supply to their users in the way they want. They pay a fee to allow for certain functions to be disabled by us prior to shipping. Disabled features can not be enabled by the consumer. It is at the discretion of the reseller.' Oh, really... So, one of the better functions of the phone is disabled, and because they paid you to cripple the phone, you DID IT? And if I lived in Europe, I would have a phone with that feature enabled? Wow... Thanks. I hope they paid a lot for that. Good grief...

That was what maid me wonder why Apple signed an exclusive agreement with AT&T for the first iPhone. AT&T was the reseller that crippled the damn phone I had!!!

Interesting story, but I'm not sure it's relevant to the use of CarPlay by particular manufacturers. In the case of CarPlay, car manufacturers are allowing a foreign OS to essentially take over a limited part of their system. Apple gives them some options as to how to do that.

Just be thankful that it's Hyundai and not the Kia branch of the conglomerate that they're negotiating with, folks. :p

I just got a 2020 Niro for my business last month. I'm liking it much more than I thought I would. I don't care about the logo. It practically drives itself with the stop and go cruise control and lane keeping. I'll probably get a Tesla later this year for myself but they do make an all electric Niro.
