Since apple has decided to curate news, i wish they would make more effort to suppress articles that are nothing more than clickbait.

That is called censorship. Just like whenever you hear or read "curation process" it's censorship. Apple is the king of secrecy, but without transparency into Apple's curation process, we have to assume it is only censorship. Are you willing to bet your complete understanding of the world to be based on Apple's sense of political correctness. I'm not, without a clear view of how they plan to censor news articles. This is no different than Google or Twitter censoring people they don't agree with.

The algorithms on Apple News are a lot better than what I was dealing with on Android. On HTC 10 I was fed a constant stream of horrific news about murders and violence and tabloid style news. I have no idea what I must have looked at or clicked on but I was also endlessly treated to a stream of bizarre news about a planet full of demons that was going to enter our solar system (the date keeps moving) and destroying us all.

I was so happy to get back to Apple News when I switched from my HTC 10 to my iPhone SE. The HTC 10 was one of my top five favorite phones but the news on it nearly made me need therapy. :p

I have many, many criticisms of Apple services but Apple News is not one of them. I do not fault them for the abysmal state of news these days.

As a political moderate who tries to keep an open mind, I do find the state of accuracy and objectivity in news reporting absolutely appalling. I’m old enough to remember it was never perfect, but it did really used to be better than how it currently is.

Through my husband’s industry contacts we get to find out the REAL state of a lot of things and the major news organizations on both sides of the political spectrum have so many things so wrong.

This is the one tiny area where I lean toward the conspiracy theory side of news and wonder if it’s just down to a small handful of extremely wealthy and powerful people on opposing sides using their wealth and influence to manipulate us all.

Because the news really is so badly skewed in so many areas from economics to oil to the environment and don’t even get me started on social engineering on both sides. If it were really about informing people, even for profit, the style of reporting would not be so inflammatory. Doctors make an effort to be neutral to their patients. I would have thought it would be a matter of professional pride for journalists to be neutral at least some of the time, but almost all news is heavily editorialized now.

Question everything!

I’m ever so grateful that for the most part, when I step away from the internet and talk to people in the real world usually things are so much more functional and positive than the news would lead us to believe. The only time I have a problem is when I’m dealing with people who have let themselves be manipulated by the news.

Seems many don't realize just how much traffic Apple News drives. While you may not use it yourself, that doesn't mean that millions of others don't.

Apple has a billion devices in the wild. It's not hard to realize.I do wonder how many people pay attention to it though or have notifications turned off. I look at it is similar to Nielsen's approach to DVR ratings. A show watched within the first 24hrs of airing get's more points than if watched two days later. But a show watched a month later gets no points. Same with news apps -- it's one thing to actually read the notifications vs get them and let them sit unread. Apple can't make $ with the app w/o actual eyeballs.

Personally I have notifications off and never really use the app. I find curator apps unnecessary. It's easy enough to flip though news sites and I often find interesting stories that my stated curating preferences would likely miss if I used an all-in-one app like News.

Agreed! The challenge is how to define that in a consistently repeatable way. Particularly for politics, there are some very polarizing topics that some people might consider click-bait while others consider it of value.
Excellent point. There are many individuals pontificating (no substantiated facts) about political issues that are really just seem to be created to attract eyes for the ads.

Since apple is not controlled by the government, i believe the term 'censorship' does not apply. Since apple's News app is just an aggregation of news outlets, I believe they also perform the requested service without being accused of 'censorship.'
Too often words are being misused and twisted from their actual meaning.

The time you are remembering was a brief period when 'news reporting entities' were considered a financial expense and not expected to turn a profit. The leaders of the organizations felt that there was a public duty to provide objective fact sourced information to their fellow citizens. Now those organizations are all run by MBA graduates that are taught to fixate on profits and expenses. The goal is to attract the most eyeballs for the least cost so the eyeballs look at the ads that fund the operations. Historically the small independent news outlets in America before that brief period were also fixated on money and profits. The news outlets that were not run as businesses were run by groups that had political agendas that wanted to manipulate their audiences for various reasons (history is really fascinating when studied objectively and often help us understand why things are done now).
Its all about the money.

Well wikipedia says this,

"Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information, on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or "inconvenient" as determined by government authorities or by community consensus.[1]

Governments and private organizations may engage in censorship."

So I am not missusing the words now am I.

"This may change soon, as Apple has supposedly begun to run a closed test of Google's industry standard ad-serving tool DoubleClick with around 20 publishers, in line with a report from last July. However, it's unclear when or if Apple News will roll it out wider, according to the report."

umm.. Doubleclick ? hardly closed when its a now a Google company. There is noting that prevents Doubleclick from limiting anything to anybody. And i wouldn't be even on the boat if Apple wants to make use of this to "try" and control their own eco-system around it..

That's all Apple will be doing. Anything you wrap around not interested even if you stay the wrapping is to protect it... Its just stating that you don't know know what its about.
