Until they stop allowing articles that are blurbs that tell you to open the article on the web, I will not use this app.

Yeah, I had thought this was the main reason for creating News app – so that we wouldn't have to go to ad-ridden 3rd-party sites. But like most of Apple's content initiatives, they can't get enough ducks in a row to make it a compelling experience. I understand that orgs like the NYT don't want to give up their subscription fiefdom and move to an ad-based model, but why not try micropayments and get rid of ads completely? I'd be fine with paying 10 cents to read a full NYT article within News, charged via Apple Pay.

Does anyone's background refresh for News not work? I have it turned on, but every time I open News it takes 10 seconds to load the 100 new stories. It doesn't seem to do any background fetching of content at all.

The News app still needs a lot of work. I'll open it and it will say fetching for new stories and it just sits there and doesn't load them. I'll pull down to fetch again and it just spins. I'll close the app and it does it again and the about 4 mins later it will load the stories. By then I've moved on. Other times it's pretty quick but mostly not.

It should load instantly and it's not my connection because it happens wherever I am. Also none of the videos embedded in the news app will play in landscape mode on my iPhone 6s. I mean who in there right mind wants to watch a video in portrait mode?

It still needs a lot of work and it's been out long enough to address these issues but Apple don't care.

not really apples fault but the worst are those websites that hide everything but the first paragraph behind a "read more" button. yes i want to read the whole thing, thats why i opened the website in the first place. stupid
It's called click bait, you wanna read so you click and that makes money for someone but not you.

I want to make the switch, but just haven't been able to budge from the Google News app since that's been my incumbent. I just don't like the presentation as much.

Great news! I love the News app and is one of the most frequently used Apple apps for me. Plus, I've already sent Apple feedback on bringing the News app to the Mac, which I really hope they do.

I second all of this! It's one of the most used apps for me too, and I've also sent feedback about a Mac app. Hopefully all these changes are being implemented in advance of one!

Apple News will end up alongside Ping as a forgotten product.

Indeed, and the Health app.

I abandoned both of them months ago. I found the News app had a poor interface, and even with customisation, it kept pushing news I had no interest in. I ended up with one website, so decided to bookmark it in Safari and use that instead. As someone else said, the updating never worked in the background.

The Health app is buggy as hell, and is hopelessly restricted. It hadn't been improved for months, so I gave up on it some while ago. I dunno; Apple's on a real downer when it comes to software and services. Makes me kinda sad; they used to be so good at user-friendly stuff.

I hope this announcement means that the app’s potential will live up to the hype when the app was unveiled. It has been the worst article aggregator I have used. On the iPad, the tombstone layout (an old newspaper term) of the article snippets is boring and dated. Newspaper and magazine layouts don’t translate to the screen well. As others have noted, the articles themselves are usually just links. They may as well be Twitter tweets. Only one publisher, Wired magazine, exploits the app’s potential regularly. Even then, the shifting layout elements effect loses its novelty quickly.

IMHO, the best article aggregator was Zite (formerly owned by CNN?). It was purchased and retired by Flipboard. It had the best content algorithms, an uncomplicated layout, and a Zen-like page transition effect.

I honestly feel like the news App is the best built in App Apple has possibly ever done (outside of what has been available since day one). I've personally been very happy with it.

I use Apple's News app daily now. Had previously browsed Google News site daily for years but as a result of Apple's app have tapered that back to a few times a week now. Looking forward to increased rich media integration.

What app is stuck in miles? If it's Apple Maps you can change it in Settings.

It's all the other apps and measurements, like spotlight and compass. I had the same problem. I used to set my location to the U.K. just to use thematic system, but then News came along and it only showed U.K. news in spotlight, so I had to switch back to U.S.

Poorly written blurbs and click bait haven't made Apple News a go-to app for me yet.
That's the publisher's problem. It's the same with all RSS readers, like clipboard etc. The blurb isn't generated by Apple, but by publishers who want you to visit their own website, or they won't earn money without converting their content to the Apple news format. You can turn off the blurbs in settings.

I still don't see a compelling reason to switch from Reeder or Newsify. But I guess it's a moot point, given how the app isn't available in Asia. What exactly is the issue here?

I'm wondering if News app will finally come to other countries and will be announced at the event on Monday.

9.3 beta added News in the iCloud settings for countries that don't even have the app unlocked yet. Could be a sign they're announcing it at the event when they likely do a brief talk about the 9.3 update. We just don't have the app unlocked in beta, so they can make it an announcement and then "flip the switch" to turn it on for other countries. It technically doesn't require an update to show up on the Springboard and use. Proof of that is you can at any time change your phones region to US and use it no matter what country you're from.

Why would you think it's a good idea in a globalised world to release a new News platform only in English? And hide it for international users?

It is totally unacceptable for a multi billion dollar company as Apple to be unable to release an app worldwide. They're doing it over and over again with their apps and services while Google is able to release their products in all languages and multiple platforms all at once. Sad.

For me it's also clear that Apple cannot keep up with the speed of innovation and release cycles of other companies when it comes to their software and services. Where is the steady stream of updates for Photos, pages, keynote, numbers, iCloud, Apple Music, HomeKit app, Health, Remote, ...? The past few years it feels like all I'm doing with Apple is a wait, wait, wait,

This app should be available globally. People need news and good journalism. People need news so they can form their own opinions about state of the world. I repeat, this app should go global.

Awesome news! News app has quickly become one of the apps that I use several times a day everyday. There are a few quirks that should be ironed out but the overall experience has been great.

I have a small blog, usually posting once or twice a day.
Apple News scrapes the site every minute. I know it wants to be efficient, but maybe there needs to be a rate-limit.
