Apple Nixes Facebook and Twitter Integration in iOS 11

In iOS 11, Apple has eliminated built-in integration with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Vimeo, a feature that allowed users to store their account information and access it within third-party apps that needed to use those services.

The Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and Vimeo options have been removed in the Settings app, and according to Axios, the four apps will now be treated like other apps, using the iOS sharing extensions that were introduced back in 2014 with iOS 8.

Rather than continue to add support for different social services, Apple went with a different approach, adding sharing extensions with iOS 8 in 2014. Until now, it has maintained the single sign-on for Twitter and Facebook in addition to supporting the sharing extensions for a wider range of apps.

Direct sign-in options were first introduced in iOS in 2011. Twitter integration was made available in 2011, while Facebook integration came in 2012. Support for Flickr and Vimeo was added in 2013 with iOS 7.

It's not. It's just consolidating them to the same system everyone else is on instead of giving them some kind of featured billing directly in the OS.

I had it set up but practically never used it anyway. I think I might have posted a photo front Photos directly once or twice. Otherwise I'd just use the app. I'm sure I won't miss it.

Pardon my confusion, so when you want to post a link to Twitter or Facebook, iOS will no longer facilitate that? You would need to copy link address & go to the FB or Twitter app and paste the link?

No, it'll just utilize the share sheet extension instead. Any app can add an item to the share sheet - Twitter and Facebook already have their own share sheet extension. Long story short, you're really not going to notice a difference at all...

Both of them are impersonal methods of communication invented only in the 19th and 20th centuries and highly dependent on technology. The only way to communicate is to travel to them. On a horse. Bah humbug.

Why? It doesn't overwrite them.

I always wondered why they did that integration in the first place.

It's a leftover feature from before there were share sheet extensions, and this was a way to allow sharing from system apps to the most popular social networks. Now there's no need for specially treated ones, any app can add its own share sheet extension and these ones already do.

The hooks for all apps are now integrated into iOS so these are no longer needed helping to even the playing field for all apps that the public want and not what is being pushed in the sharing modules.

I agree, kind of annoying seeing a list of services I never use clogging up the settings and share extension lists. I do use Facebook, so hopefully they'll integrate using the API.
