I bought that iQuiz game when it was 99p. Was a bit of a waste, only used it a few times. Most of the games looked terrible from a gameplay POV, the clickwheel wasn't great for games. Don't think I've owned a single iPod where the clickwheel registered movement 100% of the time (except on diagnostics mode, so it must have been a software problem).

I tried to find clickwheel games on the iTunes store a few weeks back and couldn't find anything. Have Apple removed them?

This new should come as a surprise to no one.

On that note, I hope they don't discontinue the Classic iPod. I love having a lot of space, and the iPod Touch, while nifty, is way too small (and kind of retarded considering the iPhone is pretty much the same price). I mean think about it, assuming you already have a mobile phone, why not just pay the exact same amount ($199) and get an iPhone instead? I see the iPod touch as a stepping stone to one day replace the iPod Classic (when size/price become comparable), but until then, it's just really gimmicky.

Maybe they'll make a touch with an HDD?

This may be a shocking revelation to everyone that says "get an iphone" instead but not a lot of people use the phone often to justify a $60 a month bill

I have an iPhone, and I still need a classic iPod simply because of its storage, and ease of use. I do not feel like taking the device out of my pocket to simply change a song. Sure I do have music on my iPhone, but while jogging, or working out, the buttons to control the iPod through your pocket can't be beat.

Apple Drops product support like I change my underwear.

People -

Every time I turn around, Apple is dropping support for a product or program.

Imovie 6 HD - LOVED it! Can't get it anymore.
G5 Platform - EOL due to Snow Leopard.
Click Wheel - Games being discouraged.

What's next? My Apple TV?

You guys are right .. the days of the clickwheel are numbered and it does even make sense to drop the clickwheel app store, because it never kicked of.

The important part of the story however, is Apples arrogance to do such a thing quitely. Apparently there have been people investing money in a platform which didn't exist anymore just because Apple couldn't announce it?
I think that stinks and just shows how much Apple cares about the people that really make their product cool, namely independent developers.

T.

I noticed a couple of people are saying you cant beat the click wheel UI when jogging etc.

However I think Apple are already aware.. you noticed you can do a lot of basic control via the headphones these days. Secondly Apple are building voice control. I personally think the voice control is not too bad and the headphones controls I use all the time.

The brand of headphones I favour don't have Apple style headphone controls. On the Clickwheel vs Touch debate I still think the Touch is a sucky music player compared to the old school iPods. It'll be years and years before I buy one.

Voice control would be perfect if the settings for it allowed you to calibrate it a bit, so that I didn't have to fake a laughable American accent simply to call my mum.

We own a lot of the click-wheel games - the kids love them, and Peggle broke my Video :D

Zuma is perfect for a click-wheel too.

I love my touch, but ya, music is easier on the others...

Although I can no longer find the iPod games by searching directly in iTunes there's a directory of games still on the Apple site and these still have working links to the iTunes store.

Here's the link: http://www.apple.com/games/ipod/

If you want games for your iPod classic look here now in case they disappear soon. I recommend Zuma :)

What's worse is Apple is refusing to allow a vendor to provide legacy hardware support when they actually want to.

Why not let them?

Rocketman

iPod Classic isn't legacy product, at least not yet...

Voice control is an epic fail if you have music or contacts from various countries. In that case the voice control just doesn't work or you'll be doing some very strange prounouncing.

Dropping support I sorta understand, but seeing as how Square had evidently already completed this game, why wouldn't Apple put it online? It can't cost them more than a few mouse clicks, and it would gain them (aside from hundreds of thousands of dollars) goodwill from all us forgotten clickwheel fans.

I don't have anything against touch screens, but being able to operate my ipod without having to look at it is very much a killer app for me. I hope this doesn't mean that they're phasing out classic ipods altogether.

What bothers me is the fact that click wheel control is as classic as the iPod itself. Also, controling something as small as nano with touch screen is just royal pain. It just won't work as well as the wheel. iPod with click wheel is the Walkmann of the 21st centtury and not a single toutch thinggy can compete with that. Honestly, I like my iPhone but if you just want the slickest music player then nothing beats Nano.

You mean Apple just decided people cannot release new software for one of its platforms regardless of what its customers may think or want? Gee, there's a shock from the company that decided you don't WANT a matte screen and you don't WANT Firewire on cheaper Macs anymore, etc. etc. And some people wonder why I advocate consumer rights. If someone wants to offer a new game for older iPods, that should be THEIR choice. If someone wants to make software for the Commodore 64 or Amiga, they STILL CAN. No one is stopping them. That's the way it should be. There are even some new Atari 2600 games out there if you know where to look.

Dudes this does NOT mean the Clickwheel iPods' days are outnumbered, it only means that Apple wants games to be on the iPod Touch and the iPhone. The App Store is such a big business that they want anyone looking for games to turn to the iPhone and iPod Touch instead of the Nano/Classic.

Considering how much more the iPod Touch costs, it's very unlikely for Apple to discontinue the Clickwheel iPods anytime soon. Plus, consider the size as well: if someone only wants to listen to music and nothing else, they don't need an iPod Touch sized device.

This only means that Apple wants games to be focused on the iPhone/iPod Touch, so that people who want games on their iPod would get one of those.

dude... the Nano is like 50 dollars cheaper....

the classic is actually MORE expensive than an 8GB 4th gen touch...

oooops... sorry for grave digging :(
