i read something in another thread with a link that it was sent to the FCC on 2/16 and cleared later after the announcement..i dont remember for sure those dates but it def. cleared later that day or the day after

I'm pretty sure it was the same day.

Wishful thinking, but it would definitely be nice if they decided to offer preorders. As stated before, I seriously doubt that will happen at this point :(

I was able to pre-order my iPhone 4 early. It was delivered to me on the release date. I hope that happens here.

midnight or 5pm?

Has anyone heard anything about whether you have to wait until 5pm to even order online or if it will be sometime after midnight on the morning of the 11th? I know they want their publicity with lines, but 1) this isn't the June iphone launch, it is still pretty cold in a lot of the country to be making crazy lines and 2) they can have their free press when their site crashes again from everyone pre-ordering.

For wat?

It's clear that apple is doing this intentionally. They want lines.

Pre-order for in-store pickup still leads to lines, so why not at least offer that?

Exactly. Why not just offer in store reservation at least? I don't want to wait in line all day and then be told that the model I want is sold out. Usually I would just order online but I have the day off and I have nothing better to do, so why not go sit in front of an Apple Store for hours?

I'm surprised people are so willing to order this product on day 1 given what happened with iPhone 4. I understand the eagerness, but wouldn't you rather wait until all the manufacturing quirks are worked out?

iPhone 4 had yellowing screens, tinted camera, light leaks in some of the early shipped screens, proximity sensor issues and "death grip". Most of those problems were worked out in subsequent manufacturing runs, others via software. But it's good to wait for Apple to work out the manufacturing quirks before plunking down your hard earned cash. Just my humble opinion.

I still have my iPhone 4 from day 1 and had none if those problems. So don't assume things jus cuz u heard someone had a problem once.

I would definitely prefer to order online and have it delivered to me on the 11th, but if I need to wait in line, I will. I will go as early as I can to ensure I get one.

It's all about the channels

All:

In the past, on launch day, Apple pretty much launched from only their stores - and that was it.

Now they are launching from Verizon, Bestbuy, WallMart and others... Guess what? Those retailers don't like it when the manufacturer undercuts their ability to sell through their retail channels.

My guess is that we won't see Apple offer pre-orders much more (if ever) for the iPhone and iPad. Retailers just don't like it and probably negotiate agaisnt it.

It's the double edged sword of using other disctribution channels - you have to manage to their rules.

Apple is expected to ship 10-12 million in this quarter.

They waited until March (when the rumors said Jan/Feb) for a reason. PRODUCT.

They're launching at Wal-Mart and Best buy too...

I have a feeling just about anyone who wants one Friday is going to be able to find one.
