It's funny... For years, I've read complaints here that Apple ought to sell a mini Mac Pro for people who want something between a Mini and a Pro. Maybe make the package a little larger, with more ports. Add a nice monitor. So, they did just that. Now people are unhappy again.
I’d buy one if it could handle the type of applications I want to run but the Mac Pro is the only one in the current lineup that can.

At this point, I don't see the need for the iMac anymore. I have a Mac mini at home where I do basic stuff, and a beast mode Studio at work where I may need it. Both have 35" curved displays on VESA mounts so it's nice and clean.

As someone who HATES cords with the fire of a million hells and also despises clutter- if this is true, I’ll be a little disappointed.

The thing I love(d) about the iMac is the single power cord that runs from the rear of the iMac to the wall- and that’s it.

My desk at home is floating- and my aging 27” iMac sits on the corner with a single cable running to a power outlet a few feet away. Everything else is Bluetooth. When I do have to charge the keyboard, mouse or trackpad, I plug in overnight so I don’t have to look at the cables. (I know. I know. I’m weird.)

I can’t wait for wireless power solutions to mature enough to recharge peripherals and for Apple to adopt the technology.

I just purchased an Apple Studio Display- and the only reason I’m not rocking back and forth in my chair and sobbing is that I can still have a single cord running from the monitor on my desk to the power outlet and use a Thunderbolt 4 cable from the display to my MacBook Pro for power and data. (Honestly- even that annoys me a little. And as long as I’m sharing my next-level crazy with everyone- I’m even considering drilling a couple of small holes in my desk and in the base of the display stand to hide the cord the mere 18” or so that it would be exposed and visible.)

Yes, I know these are first-world problems. Yes, I know I’m a little (lot?) crazy. Yes, I know- and greatly appreciate the power of the Mac Studio.

Don’t come for me. ;)

My school has a lab of iMacs. The new 24" models lack a USB-A port. The school won't replace them with machines that lack universal thumb drives, which every student uses. Our IT dept was hopeful that the 27" model would come with full ports. Apple may be missing out on some big sales here.

The other labs on campus are all Windows already.:(
I see a problem not with Apple but with your school's lab manager. What so hard about adding a USB hub to each workstation? Probably easier to access than looking for a USB port on the back of an iMac.

I don't know why people keep saying things like "a larger iMac/iMac Pro don't make sense"

If anything, the way Apple has gone all sealed non upgradable, along with amazing efficiency and performance of their own chips now -- the exact opposite should be true!

This should be the heyday of incredibly thin, beautiful and sealed devices with amazing performance!

We should get an iMac 27" and an iMac Pro 32" as well as a return of the 12" MacBook (finally with the performance and thermals to match the dream!)

We finally have the hardware and strategy from Apple that is perfect for sealed sexy all in ones --- and now they are going back to detached devices and separate monitors? lol. -- It's like upside down land over at Apple

All-in-one.

I mean, "all-in-one" is really a bit of a buzzword here. We're talking about two things here, a computer and a display. So "all-in-one" is really just "two-in-one".

And what's the benefit of that, really? A little bit of aesthetics maybe, not having a Mac Mini sit on your desk in addition to the display. I get that, but it's not worth the downside of the lacking modularity in my opinion. With a Mac Mini / Studio + external display I can replace one and keep the other if I like.

Apple would rather sell a monitor for the same price
The fact that removing the computer components only netted a $200 savings is bonkers in true Apple fashion. Even worse, Apple is basically saying that the price to produce a 5K screen hasn’t come down at all in the past 5-6 years. I really want the Studio Display, but I would almost rather just buy a 24” iMac for when I want to use a desktop Mac. The main draw of the Studio Display is that I could use it with other computers for 10+ years in the future.

The only "modularity" really isn't -- just separating the monitor and guts is sort of the bare min on that.

All Apple has to do here is bring back a legit target display mode for AIO's moving forward (now that we have cable/bandwidth tech to do it easily) so that an AIO buyer can be assured of a future for their screen if they move on to a different device.

Think if that had been possible for the 2014/2015+ iMac 5ks!?

We'd have thousands of them getting used as external monitors for laptops or 2nd screens for newer iMacs or for Mac Pros, etc

The "environmental company" really needs to do more to make their devices last longer in the field without needing replacement.

I personally don't see what an iMac has to offer over a Mac Mini / Mac Studio + external display solution, but people still seem to love the iMac.
It was cheaper and looked nicer on a desk by itself. A fully loaded out 27 inch iMac with decent Harddrive space used to cost about $3,500 and was a pretty powerful machine with a great screen. Now it would be at least $4,000 for the power version of the computer, plus up to $2,000 for the nice screen. The low end for computer and screen had moved to what used to be the highest end for a 27 inch iMac. This new "solution" costs like 50% - 80% more.

Went through a long internal debate last summer, before choosing a mini (+LG 27" screen) over iMac.
And I kinda regret it a bit.

For one, I couldn't get a webcam/microphone working without it picking up echo/reverb-whatever you call it,
works fine on a PC, can't get it running with the mini. Same thing with two different webcams. Something that'd have just worked with iMacs internal stuff.

Don't need hi-fi audio, but mini's internals don't cut it, the JBL USB speakers I got work on and off with the mini,
rubbish drivers whose mac support seems to have ended 15 minutes after I got them. Again, imac's internals would have been fine (at least were fine enough on my previous imac.

What turned me away was the 16GB max ram in iMac, that'd be fine just now, but won't be a few years from now and is not upgradeable. The same applies to mini, but at least there I can just replace the mini, keeping the monitor, external SSD's and other stuff. A second consideration was the way I lost the previous iMac to display failure, other internals would have still been fine.

A reason to applaud the Studio, btw, 32GB minimum is downright sensible and as un-apple-like as I've seen.

It's a shame, a happy user of 27 inch imac. But I have to say, even if all-in-one computer is a very elegant solution, life cycle of displays is usually quite longer then that of computers. Mac Studio + a good big display for 1k sounds like a good future combination (no way I'm spending extra to have an apple display).
A 27" 5K display is over $1000. You can easily get large 4Ks for a lot less.

And when the Mac Pro goes Apple Silicon i guess you’ll be up the creek without a paddle, huh.

We have fifty (50) 27” inch iMacs in our one educational department alone. These are upgraded every three years. What are we gonna do now?

If we replace Mac mini’s with 27” Apple screens that will cost us more and present all kinds of security issues. We really depend on our 27” inch iMacs.

Kind of makes me laugh about all the 8gb vs 16gb discussions around the release of the first M1's and everyone insisting that "Apple has changed the game!" -- "RAM no longer as important!"

lol -- nope -- it's still important and Apple just wants to sell upgrades inside the sealed boxes.

An iMac with a display a quarter the size I actually want, with the power of an iPad, that only runs software written in the last year, and isn't upgradable at all. I'm glad the chip is fast, but fast doing what? I can't think of a scenario in which I'd actually use the new iMac. I can see if they added it to the iMac line as an option for people who'd like an iMac but don't need all the utility of the big 27", but to replace the iMac line with it entirely seems like some product manager there started believing their own hype and went off the deep end.

For me its about space. I live in a studio apartment and have small desk, maybe 2.5 ft wide. For me, having JUST an iMac with a keyboard and mouse and no wires going all over the place is perfect for me. Also, when the price is comparable, why not just have a single solution?

sounds like the 24” imac is perfect for you.

I call bull on this.

Killing the bigger display iMac and just leaving that kids color version with those horrible white bezel as their only all in 1 desktop would be a very dumb move.

They saying all this now so you spend your coins on the mac studio which would be over powerful for most.

This mac studio at its cheapest is a very big jump in price especially that they are pushing you to buy the display as well and talks is that another display is to come with higher refresh rate.

No one really knows what Apple has in mind. Stands to reason the 27” iMac is popular in office and at home and that the Mac Studio is higher end which many people don’t need
Hopefully Apple puts a new iMac out later in the year
