Apple Now Assembles 14% of iPhones in India

Shareholders could easily just take a little cut and end prices would be the same for consumers. No huge losses.
Ask a number of shareholders if they are willing to take let’s say 2% cut on the money they get, you will guarantee to get a mixed result and I doubt there will be a commanding majority supporting the cut to support “domestic production”.

It's insane that people are actually OK with this. Doesn't it bother you that these people are "basically owned" by the company? They don't get to have their own lives. I've never heard anyone put it so plainly

This is evil.
Many Foxconn employees were unhappy when Apple cut their over time hours. It’s not uncommon for lot of workers to move in to cities, work as much as possible for 5 years and move back to their home towns and villages. Buy land, houses and retire in 5-10 years, than being slaves for most of their prime in west. It’s bad if the employees are forced to work, but most of these out of town guys want cheap accommodation, lot of hours to make money. IIRC, I saw tweets about Apple suppliers planning to build 78 K houses in India, for employees to live, work, shop in one place.

Surely you mean Foxconn, rather than Apple, cut Foxconn's employee overtime hours.
Apple forced Foxconn and other suppliers to cut the Over time hours after the media coverage in the US. Apple also started publishing the reports right after the incident. Many workers quit after their hours were cut, they wanted to make, save money and retire in 5-10 years.

That's the right way to go about things, but I'm surprised Apple made such a draconian move. I'd much rather Apple pushed to improve their working environments; it've been much cheaper too.

With all due respect to the reports you cite, I think it's just the news agencies plastering Apple's good name for a bump in viewership numbers: I'm sceptical.

100%. Apple pumps the viewership numbers and a bigger scandal. It did force Tim Cook to visit the Foxconn factory and others. One of the most popular reports at that time on allegations of Foxconn/Apple was a bunch of made-up stuff.

India had to amend the laws to allow 48 hr work week in factories from 40 hours, and also allow women to work night shifts. There is a fine line between exploitation and people who want to work as much as possible and retire in 5-10 years.

Apple has been setting up ‌‌iPhone‌‌ manufacturing hubs in India ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi began promoting his "Made in India" initiative, which requires that 30% of products sold by foreign companies be manufactured or produced within the country.
This is the official one-minute video of the "Make in India" initiative that was shown worldwide starting in 2014:

And this is an unofficial animated video explaining what "Make in India" is:

Oh no... racism again. I prefer facts like Quality Control needed improvement and it was done.
You didn’t see any pictures of scratches phones out of the box of iPhones „assembled in India” ? Well, I saw many on web after 15 series launch and I didn’t make it up… I’m pointing out what many people experienced. So stop being ignorant and use google and YouTube first and notice facts I’m talking about and then say I’m racist.

Example of your „quality control” below…

In my country they still sell India-made phones cheaper for a reason. But hey, they just started and mistakes can happen. I hope they get better soon.

any company can have quality issues. Apple usually sets a very high bar.

by "many", how many exactly? of the millions built and sold...

India starting to scale up, during/after covid was probably always going to be a challenge.
the most common quality issue story i can find is 50% of CASINGS having issues. And being caught before use/sale.

given phones have ID codes, it would be very easy to work backwards and find out who added what part.
pretty sure they would be either retrained or removed if a finger pointed at repeat offenders.

phones come with warranties. if you had a faulty one, they would replace it.

like anything, photograph it as you unbox if you have any concerns to prove it arrived that way.

just remember over the years we've had comments/jokes about quality of goods in Japan and Korea and Mexico and anywhere things have been made where labour is cheap. it still reads as racist without a pile of evidence rather than a few anecdotes or posts from one person.
