Parents too lazy to be parents is why this is happening.

At what age are you allowed to buy cigarettes and alcohol?
Should that also be free and only controlled by parents? 🙄

Sellers have to check this, and rightly so!

Apple / Google / Meta must do the same.
They have billions in profits, so implementing this would not be a problem.

I don't understand how anyone can defend the big tech companies.

Steve Jobs didn't allow his young children to have iPhones or iPads, or how was that again?

Zuckerberg is aware of internal studies at Meta that show how negatively Instagram affects children. His children will definitely not get an Instagram account at a young age; he will protect them from that.

Why is that?

They know about the harmful effects of their products.

It’s a sad state of affairs that parents today don’t know how to not buy iPhones or iPads for their children. NOT spending money is such an insurmountable challenge!

Wait, you mean, as a parent aware of the dangers, he’s protecting them from that by not allowing them to have an Instagram account? Really sucks that only rich people have the ability to tell their kids “You’re not getting an instagram account.” Maybe one day someone will teach poorer people those same skills.

Until then, they have no choice but to buy their children iPhones and iPads and help them sign up for Instagram. 🙁 Hopefully the government will… wait a minute, the same parents that would be required to sign them up now are just going to sign them up WITH this in place! 😳

Ok, maybe we could have ANOTHER law that will restrict those adults from signing onto any accounts without first checking with the government. Then, the government can allocate them a Social Media Access token and then watch as they sign up for that account putting in all the correct information (that the government has on file to compare against). One token per user per month and you can only sign up for government approved Social Media. Only then can children be properly protected!

Well, any effort of educating parents to NOT buy iPhones or iPads for their kids would be immediately shot back by Apple and they will say something like “iPhone and iPad makes your kids smarter. Please buy”.

I’m in full support of banning lootbox apps until someone reaches 18+. Wonder how those freemium game developers would react though. Probably not gonna be happy if such restriction rolls out to more regions.
The World is becoming a dystopian nightmare 😭 I miss pre 2020s
The world was and always is a dystopian nightmare. It’s just that with tech, the nightmare becomes more apparent.

When they say ‘age assurance’, they mean laws imposed by government which usually entails you giving your full driving licence or passport details to a third party company, and wait for that information to be stolen as they inevitably get hacked…. It is one of THE most stupid ideas for age verification yet…
Yeah as if government database had never been hacked and info stolen before. With that being said, handing over third party the real information makes hacking much easier.

Makes me cringe when at the grocery store, seeing a toddler in the stroller with their face glued to the parent's phone. Not sure how having an age gate on say tiktok, if the parent just tosses their kid their age verified tiktok app.
Maybe some of those parents are just way too busy working and trying to not lose job, thus losing income, they simply can’t spend enough time with their kids and teach them? I once saw someone say he had 2 day jobs and 1 night job while raising 3 kids as a single father. Raising Kid is a lifelong commitment, not a 24 month lease.

What I hope is more and more people become a bit more responsible and think twice before having baby but that’s the topic for another day.

Darn it, you’re right. With those kinds of words coming from a large corporation, today’s Parents have no chance! If only they could be taught to think about what they want and align their actions with that? Apparently, only if they’re rich. 🙁

Not this parent. But then again, I do my job and am not interested in outsourcing it to some disinterested bureaucrat.

As it is Apple has family sharing and I have it set that I have to approve my kids’ purchases.
When parents are overwhelmed with earning enough money for their kids to spend, certain things often need to be put aside. You will see enough support from parents that these kinds of laws don’t get challenged much.

I am in the UK and had to apply for a new driving licence as mine has expired. They only give 10 years with the photo ID cards. In order for me to do so online I had to, no choice, verify who I was!!!!.... so I used my old driving licence as it was still valid, but I had to use my camera and scan the front and back of my licence then scan my face!

It gave me a taste of what these systems are and they are far far too invasive IMO. Also I knew damn well I did not need to verify who I was to the government. It is nothing more than an excuse for the government to get your face scan and do as it pleases with it!

You don't want to understand, do you?

Zuckerberg developed one of the worst services for minors!
It's well known how Instagram affects teenagers.

Add to that dark patterns... but he wants to protect his own children?
And the other children can be exploited. 💸

Really sucks that only rich people have the ability to tell their kids “You’re not getting an instagram account.” Maybe one day someone will teach poorer people those same skills.
It's like nutrition:
It has more to do with education.

But that doesn't mean that educated people aren't also addicted to smartphones and social media.

And this is where the problems begin for the next generation of children.
Many parents no longer have this under control.

approved Social Media. Only then can children be properly protected!
No social media for children at all!
Only from the age of 18.

Why not from 16? That's when children are in the middle of puberty!
They should live without comparing themselves to the whole world. 🥳

You didn't address this:
When it comes to alcohol and cigarettes, you seem to be in favor of store owners checking your children's age, right?

Or should parents be responsible for this again?🙄

Making apps that offer loot boxes 18+ is great and I wish it would be implemented here in Europe as well.

The World is becoming a dystopian nightmare 😭 I miss pre 2020s
I miss the pre 80s when you could tell your female coworker dirty jokes without being looked at like a perv. I miss the pre 70s when you could drink and drive. I miss the pre 60s when you could take your gun on a plane. I miss the pre 50s when you could beat up your kids. I miss the pre 30s when women couldn’t vote. What a time to be alive.

Wait up, you are surprised that applying for a driving license online required you to prove your identity?

But… how is he able to protect his children? This law isn’t available in his country. What is this magic available to him that’s unavailable to any other parents in the world?

OH, I see, it’s only people with billions of dollars that are educated enough to know how to do this! The education system have failed them! Wait, it appears that you are aware enough, are you a billionaire as well?!?

Where, in ANYTHING I typed, does it say I’m in favor of store owners doing anything? 🙂 And, anyone that thinks that rule is 100% effective at keeping alcohol and cigarettes out of the hands of children is sadly mistaken.

In a shocking turn of events, Apple has started to force OS-level KYC age verification in some regions, including the UK.

It blocks downloading apps in the App Store or making in-app purchases until you verify your age.

iOS also takes it upon themselves to block access to “18+ websites” like Tinder, requiring you to verify your age in order to turn off the restriction.

Attempting to turn off “Content & Privacy Restrictions” in Settings forces you to verify your age to be allowed to do so.

What a horrible timeline we are living in.

Our own phones are policing us. Our own hardware is becoming restricted and censored.

Thanks Apple

The alternative is just to not sell phones in the UK. They could also pull out of the EU, Japan, Brazil, and anyone else who passes laws they don't agree with. Is that a sustainable strategy? No. Don't blame Apple. Blame your government.

It wasn't for that, it was to prove my identity to sign for the live system. But they send you a letter to advise you need a new licence, which you can manually apply for too with a form from a Post Office. I already have an account for my car tax which didn't need this ID check. But you now need to perform the exact same check for Discord servers. It is going to creep into everything.

So the ID check wasn't fir applying for a licence, but to access the government system of which 'one' part of it allows you to apply for a licence.
