Then you have to think about what the message is. Maybe social media isn't about devices but what lifestyle apps you could be using. If I'm looking at health pages, remind people of the new HealthKit. If I'm looking at vacations, remind people of iPhoto for editing those pics. Go for "you could be using Apple here..."

It's still social media.. some idiot's going to comment right below your ad saying something horrible, and totally wasting the value of your ad.

Really, social media is completely inappropriate for branding... you don't want the general public to define your brand - your brand should only be defined by you, not some idiot on Facebook.

The thing about professional media (instead of social media) is that professional editors are much better at building content that enhances associated branding.

I'd contribute a verse about their recent advertising, but it'd just get me kicked off the forum.

I don't think most people even know they're watching Apple Ads anymore.

I actually like the 'Your Verse' ad. It's not dissimilar to the 'Think Different' ad in vibe, but perhaps not as powerful. You can see what they were going for. It's much better than a lot of the crap we've seen out of Apple and its ad agency for years starting with the 'I'm a Mac' commercials. Here's a cool trendy kid and a nerd with glasses - see how awesome we are?? Those ads were so smug and self congratulatory. That said, perhaps 'Your Verse' is too, just in a different kind of way. Still, it's easier to stomach!

The thing I love about the Your Verse ads is that they show what people are doing with the iPad / iPhone and a little imagination (and a few thousand $ of accessories!) with the implied message that if these people can make great cool stuff with iPhone then so can you. The Apple ads are also a great showcase for App developers as they often feature multiple 3rd party apps along the way.

This is in stark contract to a LOT of other phone / tablet ads which seem to concentrate almost exclusively on listing meaningless specs over some flashy cgi firework show and spend absolutely no time at all showing people actually using the device.

Advertising from Apple is always delightful and absorbing. Each and every advertisement makes all of us extremely proud to be loyal Apple consumers who have a taste for the best products and experiences humanly possible. And only Apple can do this.

This made me throw up in my mouth a little.

No one wants to be constantly bothered with advertisements. A company who puts their banners everywhere gives the impression that it needs it - low quality, low cost garbage products need to be advertised this way.

Is that supposed to be irony?
I loved their ads, especially the mac/pc ones. But those "verse" ads are horrible. When I first saw them I didn't realise it is about Apple products. Could have been for a car. An insurance company.

If Apple wants to target only sophisticated, wealthier customers they don't need to put ads on tv; those will find their way to Apple anyway.

If Apple wants to reach a broad spectrum of prospective customers this kind of ad is not really appropriate. How many people are nowadays fond of poetry? Who knows Whitman outside the US? And why should I tell them "what my verse is" (whatever this means) if all I want is to buy an iPad?

This made me throw up in my mouth a little.

Ha. Yeah same here. The PR/marketing team really did their job well with this particular user! Talk about drinking the Kool-Aid. They've got an IV straight into their bloodstream. =P

Have you seen Breaking Bad? Walt Whitman is famous again (Walter White is named after him and he's even given a book of Whitman's poetry).

I would presume anyone who knows anything about poetry and literature would have at least heard of Whitman. Unless you're suggesting that the teaching of poetry is on the decline and that fewer people are exposed to it - that's another thing entirely.

Anyway, I'm in Britain and I love Whitman. My wife perhaps even more, but she's got more reason to given her educational background.

I wonder what video editing system Apple uses internally?? If it is FCP X, are they suffering the same frustrations I am, or do they have access to some better version, not yet released to the users???

Is that Robin Williams doing the voiceover for the Your Verse ad?

John Keating, English teacher at Welton Academy and original member of the Dead Poets Society -- as played by Robin Williams ;)

Movie clip it's taken from:

I wonder how many other Wisconsin people get the reference? Now that I'm now living in Chicago, I'll add in 588-2300....Empire. Another classic bad ad campaign that lives on regardless of how bad it is.

They're in different parts of the country too, just throw in a different area code and it's the same people... same ad. I'll throw The General into the mix here... sooooo cheaply done, yet effective. For a great low rate you can get online, go to The General and save some time!

Okay... so at 35secs you a get a clear shot of the dude shooting the waterfall with a Rode mic plugged into his iPad.
Someone please tell me how, how, HOW!!!! you do this as I have yet to find any simple adapter etc that lets you do this.
Why the frak do Apple make audio-input so difficult on iPads & iPhones yet then they produce these adverts showing you that you can do anything?

Not only cost reduction, but quality improvement. I worked in advertising nearly 15 years and couldn't stand it anymore and left. Most people who work on the accounts they do don't care about the brand they're working for; they care about impressing other ad people and winning awards. When you bring things in house like this, to a brand that people are actually passionate about, the people who want to come work for you, or the ones you go after, are going to be the ones who are going to put the most heart in it. They won't make the ad because they care about awards, or peer recognition, they'll do it because they truly care.. You can absolutely see it in the "what will your verse be" ads. To me that was the first time anything Apple did felt like "Think Different".

This is a good example of in-sourcing. More enterprises are going for in-sourcing as means of cost reduction measures.
