Apple CEO Tim Cook today announced that its active installed base of devices has hit 1.4 billion, a milestone the company hit at the end of December.

Apple's active installed base includes the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch models in use around the world. Of the 1.4 billion active devices, 900 million of those are iPhones.

The new 1.4 billion milestone comes nearly a year after Apple announced that it had 1.3 billion active devices back in December 2018, and the growth comes despite a Q1 2019 decline in iPhone sales.

On the strength of that active installed base, Apple's services category set new all-time records, seeing a 19 percent growth in revenue year-over-year.

That’s a lot of devices. Don’t be misled into thinking 1 in 6 people on earth have an Apple device though. More like 1 in 20 have multiple devices.

I would add to their numbers right now if they would release new desktop Macs!

Here’s the device breakdown according to AboveAvalon. I can’t vouch for its accuracy, but I do trust the writer to have done his homework.

This is somewhat accurate since Apple confirmed today there are 900M iPhones.

Yeah, I am still slowly digesting the earnings report. Certainly beats earlier estimates of 2-3 hundred million as purported by some other members.
That was an utter joke. Just goes to show you how some people here literally have no idea about the underlying business and the facts.

Yep. We've got like 8 or something ridiculous in our house. 2 desktops, 2 iphones, 2 laptops, an iPad, an Apple TV -- and my last iPhone is still kicking around and functional. Oh, and there are a couple old iPods in drawers that may or may not work.

It's very impressive, when you think about it, that iCloud works as well as it does.

Incorrect. Very few people have multiple iPhones considering how expensive they are so most of those 900 million active iPhones will be unique. Also, that 1.4 billion figure includes around a quarter of a billion active iPads and Neilsen reports that 51% of iPad owners do not own an iPhone.

Also, Apple reported 782 million active iCloud users over 3 years ago and 885 million active iTunes/App Store users way back in Nov 2014. Asymco projected the latter figure would have passed 1 Billion active iTunes/App Store users by the start of 2015 and 1 Billion iCloud users by early 2017. And remember, a large proportion of those iTunes accounts are shared family accounts with the one credit card.

In contrast Google reported only 1 Billion active Google Play Store users in Sept 2015 out of 1.4 Billion active Android devices. More recently Google reported 2 Billion active Android devices, so that means around 1.4b active Google Android users.

Only 40% of Apple device owners have multiple devices. 60% only own 1 device. (Source:Above Avalon)

Neil Cybart is one of the most thorough and interesting commentators about Apple, but many of his are just guesstimates, educated yes, but guesstimates nonetheless, and as such, may be wildly off.

1.4 billion devices. Compare this to how not many years ago, Apple was boasting having 30 million active Mac users.

i wonder how many of those are macs with 10.6.8 or older?

judging by the amount of customers i talk to every day and a shockingly big amount are still on machines that are 6, 7, 8 years old with snow leopard. and a couple every week that call to ask if snow leopard is the newest **** and how they can upgrade their panther, tiger or leopard machine to 10.6

Yes, that is correct. Out of 1.4 billion active devices, Apple has reported 900m+ iPhones and 100m Macs. Analysts estimate there are 50m active Apple Watches and 50m Apple TVs which leaves around 300m iPads and iPod Touches (which both run iOS).

That gives a total of about 1.2 billion active iOS devices which is around 60% the size of Google's 2 billion active Android devices (tablets and phones). Even including AOSP devices sold mostly in China, iOS is still close to 50% the size of Google Android + AOSP.
