After briefly taking down the Apple Store, Apple today began offering U.S. customers a $50 gift card with every Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD purchase made through its online store.

The promotion runs for the next two weeks from July 1 to July 14, and the gift card can only be used for a future Apple purchase. In other words, customers can't use it to knock $50 off the Apple TV they are buying. The Apple TV must be bought through Apple's online store, and the promotion is only open to individual customers.

Apple doesn't regularly offer promotions of this kind, but the company may be clearing inventory to make way for a new Apple TV model. Apple is working on a refreshed version of the Apple TV with an updated A14 chip and 4GB RAM, with the device set to be launched as soon as 2022, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also said that Apple is working on a 2022 refresh of the Apple TV. Kuo believes that the new Apple TV will have an improved cost structure, which suggests a lower price point that is more competitive with other streaming media players.

Might it be that Apple selling the current model with a $50 gift card means that a new model priced at $50 below the current price is imminent?

I mean, hopefully. At least that, if they wan't to be even vaguely competitive in the field. But I wouldn't read that in to it. I bought the Apple TV 3rd Gen when they cut the price to £50 before the release of the HD. But that didn't mean the HD was launching at that price. They just wanted to run down the stock.

Edit: On which, actually, can anyone remember how long before the release of the HD it was that they slashed the price of the 3rd gen?

As people are probably speculating. I would assume that they plan on killing off the HD edition, lowering the price of the 4k and then giving us a new unit.

The difference between the 4k and the HD is only like $30. So this gift card really does bring the price down on both units rather well IMO.

I don't understand this logic.
The $50 gift card offer is great but this all came out of the blue so I can understand why some came to that conclusion. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's always been known or theorized by many that whenever Apple or any reseller puts up a special offer like that, it's an indication that a new model is around the corner.

Sure seems like a new model may be incoming. The HD model is long overdue to be updated or dropped. The new model is what I’m waiting for.
The HD must be selling well, only explanation for why it is still being sold, makes no sense to me but I guess there are people that like the Apple TV UI and want to save a bit of money, I still have the HD on a less used TV and it still works fine

time for the 4k to be dropped down to the HD price and a newer more powerful model to replace the 4K. But I wouldn't count on it seeing the price increases.

The TV and discount not so interesting, but that this is what they took the store down for.

Think of what Amazon does on a daily basis let alone Prime Day.

I imagine Apple's online store being like the engine room of the Titanic when they update it for the $50 gift card: people turning huge wheels and shoveling coal to get the thing turned back on as fast as they can.

But what would that new more powerful model possibly have? The only thing I can think of is turning it into a gaming console of sorts able to play AAA games. And as we all know, there aren't many of those games so it'd be hardware without software. For just media consumption, I don't see anything they could possibly add to it.

Other than just better performance there are still quite a few things they could add (not saying they would add some of these things or that they all require a new chip to do)

VP9 Profile 2
AV1
H.266
120fps
HDR10+
HLG
Bitstreaming support for all audio
8K
VRR/QMS

The current hardware already supports 120hz, they just haven't allowed it in the software yet.

Fair points on the rest.

Tempted to upgrade my 1st gen AppleTV HD to a 4K. But maybe I should wait for the next Apple TV. And maybe this is irrelevant anyway since I'm not in the US.

I'm not sure we do know that, I don't think we have seen Apple use FRL (fixed rate link) yet. Isn't the only sort of thing backing up the current model can do 120hz is Apple calls it HDMI 2.1?

HDMI 2.1 has always been a pretty meaningless distinction as all the features are optional even increased bandwidth. So as long as they supported one 2.1, it was by definition 2.1. And now they have gone as far to just rename all 2.0 ports 2.1

sure, it definitely suggests a new model is on the way, but I don't follow why it suggests that model will be $50 cheaper than the current one. just sounds like wish fulfilment to me.
