In addition to overhauling the iMac lineup with new M1 iMac options, Apple today quietly added a new feature to the Mac mini. Mac mini buyers can now opt to add a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port to the device for a $100 add-on.
I'm sure it was quietly added, but it wasn't today. I noticed this option last week when I was playing with Mac mini configurations. I didn't realize it was new, though.

I'm very happy to see this added to the M1 Mini, although I wonder if this eats into the 40Gb bandwidth of the solo thunderbolt 4 channel.
Nice to see it also supports the NBase-T standards so it can do 2.5Gbe, & 5Gbe also if you don't have 10Gbe wiring in place yet. The 2.5/5Gbe standard works on older Cat-5e cabling.

We are just starting our upgrade to 10Gbe across the board, and are replacing lots of older Macs.

Uh, this isn't new. We've several Intel Mac Mini's w/ built-in 10Gbe ethernet. They've been around for a while.

Now I have to determine whether I want to wait for an M1X version you know is coming to finally bury the Intel version.
I don't think there will be a M1X. There might be a M2X at some point, but I'm going to wager a coke that Apple only does major architectural updates to the M series once a year. The first thing to be updated will be the iPhone with the latest 'A' series chip, and then after that they will roll out the new M chip based on the new A series.

The chip shortage this year canned the release of the 16" M1 MBP. This fall (post iPhone) we will see the new 14" M2 based MacBook Pro, as well as a new M2 based 16" MBP. Spring 2022 will see the new 30" (or larger) iMac based on the M2(X?) as well as the MacMini updated to M2.

The new beast of a MacPro will release Nov 2022, based on the M3, completing the 2 year transition (Nov 2020-Nov 2022).

Still waiting for HDMI 2.1. Soon as that’s available I’ll purchase a new Mac Mini.

Still think the MacBook Pro 16 with a i9 is still a better computer. 8 cores with dual thread, more memory and storage options I can still use a EGPU with a 3080 card. I want a Mac mini pro also I wish Apple was smart enough to still a Intel processor until they can get their own processors up to i9 or a AMD level processor. Think I am going to hold on to my MacBook Pro 16 for at least 4 more years unless Apple can show me equal or better value.
I’m not going to try to counter any of your intel verses AS claims, that’s been done to death - but Apple do already keep intel versions of their machines available until the AS version is ready. The 16” machine you’re referring to *only* has intel versions at the moment, whilst the mini and the other AS models all still have intel options except the MacBook Air. You’re asking for something that’s already happening.

I'm sure it was quietly added, but it wasn't today. I noticed this option last week when I was playing with Mac mini configurations. I didn't realize it was new, though.
You may have seen it whilst configuring the intel versions of the Mac mini? That’s been available for years...

How can they, or anyone that buys this, justify the $100 price difference for a part that costs $3 more?
Where on this earth can you find a 10GbE controller?

I've worked in data centers and dealt with networking from standard GbE to QSFP28-DD over OS2, I have never seen anything close to a $3 10GbE controller.

I think it's awesome Apple is offering this again, most people have no need for 10GbE but those that do will happily pay $100 which is in line with cheap PCI-e NIC's and far below say an Intel X550-T1.

Wow, still most useless Mini ever!
Give it 2 x internal M.2 NVME slots so we can add additional storage, we can’t install systems with external storage hanging off it.

I think you're just not the target market for this Mac mini. The reason I want to get rid of my MBP is that I'm not using its screen at all, I have two external monitors. I don't game either or do any video/photo editing, I don't need powerful hardware, I just want it to be fast, small, and quiet. You have a 3080... The Mac mini ain't gonna touch that. But I was reading this article (https://www.macworld.co.uk/news/mac-trends-2021-3800044/) earlier today, they're saying since "Apple is equipping the Mac range with its own chips from the bottom up - first the entry-level models, then the inbetweeners, and finally the premium models at the end," you'll probably get the high-end chips you're looking for next year, or the year after.

The only problem with this news is that it comes too late.

And what's with that $3 dollar comment lol. On a Mac that has no PCIe slot (save for the Mac Pro), a Thunderbolt 10G dongle is like $150 upwards, either with a noisy fan or passively cooled that the unit is hot as f__k, not to mention it takes up one precious TB port. Having it built-in solves a lot of logistics problems, and it offers stability and cooling.
