As expected, Apple has published a new support document with release notes for standard AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max firmware updates. Going forward, Apple says the page will outline new features and changes included in AirPods firmware updates.

The latest firmware version for AirPods is 4E71 and was released in May. Sadly, Apple's support document is not particularly helpful for this version, with the release notes only mentioning "bug fixes and other improvements," without any specific details. Hopefully the release notes are more detailed for future firmware versions.

On an iPhone updated to iOS 16, a link to Apple's support document for AirPods firmware updates can be found by opening the Settings app, navigating to General → About → AirPods, and tapping on Firmware Version. The support document is similar to one that Apple has maintained for AirTag firmware updates since earlier this year.

There is still no manual way to update AirPods, with new firmware installing automatically over time while the AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. There are some tips and tricks that may help with the process.

(Thanks, Federico!)

It was said that the new Airpods Pro 2 will be twice as good for noise cancelling.
So this update is to make the Airpods Pro 1 noise cancelling half as good as it was so their statement holds true... lol

Clicking those 'i' buttons does nothing. The company is too lazy to even provide a link to a webpage with actual release notes. As if explaining what's changed is somehow beneath them. How dare you stupid users question us!

Those aren’t i’s, they’re exclamation points. At least Microsoft does provide actual release notes that say more than ”bug fixes and improvements,” even if you do have to go find the page with the notes.

Come on Tim Apple, no "bug fixes and improvements"!
And please let us decide whether to update or not instead of forcing it
Hey, come on, get with the programme... Have you not figured it out yet? We give Apple lots of money and they decide what we need to know, when we need to update and what is or is not good for us. Hope you've got that now! :)

Not sure if placebo but my AirPods Pro sound a lot better following the firmware update / iOS 16 update.

Maybe it was the personalised spatial audio.
I don't think there has actually been a firmware update released recently. 4E71 has already been out for quite a while now.
