Data collection uses metrics like software version, time since last update, time since last restart, charge level, battery status, and more to identify individual users.

How is it that apps can even access this information again?

Oh hell yes. Good move Apple. Love how this company respects privacy and security of the owner.
I love Apple's stance on privacy and security. However, there are still some big issues that Apple either ignores or haven't done anything about yet. All those security and privacy problems are outlined in detail here for both iOS and Android: https://securephones.io/main.html#Ch1.S1.SS1

It's kind of incredible that this wasn't the model all along. Since when was it OK to track people without their consent?
Since advertising company exists?
Nobody else does what Apple is doing here. All of Silicon Valley want your data. So I would give Apple a credit, not dismissing them just because they didn’t do it on day one.

Yes, spying and data collection should be put up for public shaming and users should be warned and alerted. Just like the tobacco industry, it must be known that these business methods are evil and should be never be the norm.

Apps have to “ask”, but they don’t have to comply. It’s just a “request”. In reality, it just give the user a false sense of security. Why doesn’t the dialog say “Do not track me” or “Block app tracking”?
The AppStore rules say that the app/developer has to comply and should not circumvent. The developer could be banned if he is caught circumventing the rules. This means that what you are saying is wrong.
It doesn’t say block because that would give the idea that the operating system would have the ability to completely block any kind of tracking, which is of course impossible since there would be millions of different ways to implement tracking. As such, the phrasing makes the developer responsible for complying in all ways and forms.

When will Apple release this privacy focused version? I have the latest beta, but no app asked permission to be tracked or not yet.

I hope Facebook looks at this as well

this needs to be spread to those who have Android. Get a cheap iPhone or iPad, update it to iOS 14.5 and all apps must have this feature after upgrading. A match made in heaven
Wish I had that warm fuzzy feeling that apple was doing this for altruistic purposes, but somehow I doubt it. The cynic in means believes that all apple is doing is tracking all of this information themselves, and preventing others from doing it, thus cementing its own on hold on power/information gathering.

Assuming any big corporation is doing 'the right thing' seems pretty naive these days - hope I am wrong; time will tell.

All hell would break loose if Apple does this.
But, Apple apps probably won't show this popup, this is most likely be in the setup process so they are "safe"
Apple also says that if they track you they will use it so that the information is not linked to your device with nor ID.

What big corporations say, and what they actually do usually have no relation to each other. Again, hope I am wrong about Apples motivations, but don't think I will be.

Good! Stop spying on me arseholes
You are aware that all those apps only used a feature as it was provided by Apple over all those years?

Taking away the tracking will make all ad networks worthless on iOS except for Apple's own ad network. Apple knows enough about you to sell targeted ads.

Exactly - apple does not do things for altruistic reasons anymore then facebook or google does (Nor any other large corporation for that matter).

This has two sides. One is privacy and second is money. If apps can not use this revenue source, they will have to switch add based model or to paid or subscription model that we all love so much. There is potential revenue increase for Apple.
Stealing power from Facebook or Google is something nobody will complain of course.
We will see how this will transform digital world. Constant changes Apple is doing in system makes very difficult to keep freeware apps compatible.. I think Apple think there should not be free apps. That you deserve money for your good work. If I am wrong they could/should make software fund to support good freeware.

Have you had any apps get updated or have you installed any new apps since you started using the beta? Based on this article, and other info I have seen, just using an existing app won't show this popup - which makes sense, since for apps you already have installed you already agreed to any conditions when you installed the app.

I am not saying it would be a bad thing if this prompt, or something similar, was presented when you open existing apps - who knows, maybe this could be a future enhancement.

They is no way to prevent one tracking as the internet is not controlled only managed.

eg. If you’re browsing a webpage you’re IP is generally given out, including what browser and platform you’re using and the average person not going to the trouble to hide their IP or spoof what platform and browser they are on

they are ways around Apple tracking prevention tho helps not to make it so easy for companies to track you, tho they are other methods and I have no doubt they will be looked at tho becoming harder and that’s a good thing

Except if you look in your iPhone, “Personalized Ads and Siri” are giving and tracking all your moves to Apple. This is how they generate statistics to sell you and your family more. Its called data driven decision making....
once in your iPhone your data is never private.

The app review process catches any code designed to uniquely identify a device, which is the essence of this very article.

It would be bad for Apple to promise that they are successfully blocking app tracking, but then some apps manage to bypass that. Who would users blame — Apple or the app developers? You guessed it... Apple. So this is up to developers to honour, and Apple to enforce, but with technology, anything is possible. Apple needs to protect themselves, too.
You're very naive, have you even seen the tracking setting. They can still track you, even Apple warns about that...

I'm not afraid of those 'constantly in the spotlight' like Apple saying what they will do....it's the 'roaches in the dark' (YOUSE FB,Google etc.) to be cynical about...until they're caught via flashlight!
