I don't think there's much cross over between a proficient C++ programmer and an experienced CNC milling machine operator.
Seriously, when will people on this forum stop posting this c**p? Apple of course adds new emojis as they are added to the Unicode Standard. I think it should be a bannable offence to keep repeating these boring comments on this forum, it's like the new "safari is snappier" but totally unfunny.
It’s about time those services actually start working outside the USA. I’ve been sponsoring Apple with lots of €€ for years now and only seeing crippled half baked services go into action for the so called miraculous ecotrap.these days they’ve become more like an handicap than a selling point.
Messages is hard to use when most friends, colleagues don’t have it. Same for FaceTime. Maps is a disaster compared to google apps as is Siri and iCloud.

In general software engineers only develop software and never touch hardware in terms of hardware design. What you are trying to convey is misleading.

It is misleading to suggest that software developers also develop hardware. The percentage of people that identify themselves as software developers that also design hardware will be less than a fraction of a percent.
All that is your opinion. The services business is far stronger than your anecdotal opinion. Siri and Maps are so much better than just 12 months ago. You need to update your Siri and Maps suck software.
Certain things working in other countries is more of a country issue than an Apple issue. They want their stuff to work everywhere and a lot of it does.
Eugh, why do people call it that? It's the iPod Touch, not "iTouch". Say it right or don't say it at all.
iTouch is a line of Logitech keyboards, not Apple products.
No surprise that Apple is in need of software engineers. On both fronts Mac and iOS is years behind in their OS. Many smartphone engineers say that Apple's iOS is around 5 years behind the current Android OS and on the MAC platform; it is already at least 3 years behind Windows 10 and around 2 years behind Google Chrome OS. The only smartphone OS that Apple is ahead of now is a new "old" OS that runs on a tablet called GrandPad - aimed at Seniors and others that are computer illiterate.
Which specific features are you using to define being "ahead" or "behind"?
Oh, and GrandPad runs Android.
In that description, you barely touch the hardware. You'd be considered a software engineer. By that, I mean companies will hire you as SWE.
Also, in the old days, everyone had to touch hardware. It's only like that with AI because it's wild west still. Wait until those drivers are supplied to you, and you'll be back to software-only. Even if you're building accelerator chips, that'll be done in some standardized ways through software.

Software development always lags hardware development. Tim's mind blowing hardware pipeline is getting thinner. Then again, that is Tim's mindset.
I thought Apple was going to be a processor king with ARM (which is hardware) - you would imagine you would need more hardware people for that initiative. Or maybe the whole processor push is just BS. Seriously, does Apple know where it is going anymore?
They are hiring cpu people. How many do you think you need? There were 20 logic designers on athlon 64. If they hire a hundred they can design 5 chips at a time. If they hire 200 software engineers they still have hired more software than hardware engineers, and yet they can make a major push into CPUs.

I mean take Siri, they have to hire someone to read social media to tell them what’s wrong with it? Seriously? No that’s damage control and spin generation and nothing more.
It would be nice if they had more hardware engineers, but Apple doesn’t seem interested in hardware anymore so it’s kinda pointless I guess? I dread to think what the new Mac Pro will end up like, some are saying an actual modular as you buy an add on box to upgrade the GPU etc system. That means locked down hardware you cannot upgrade yourself..
If this is what they make, then all the hardware engineers will do is further lock it down.
Perhaps all these software engineers will be busy in Final Cut improvements?

You're right. After all, this article is literally saying that they'll hire five software engineers, then fire all three hardware engineers they currently have.
It couldn't possibly be that, as is, they have thousands of both hardware and software engineers, and the only thing (possibly) changing is the rate at which those teams are growing.
(If anyone is wondering, the Silicon Technologies team alone currently has 468 open job postings. Which, in MacRumors Forums parlance, basically means they're doomed and should switch to Qualcomm SoCs.)
