I have the Mavic Air (the older one) and I absolutely love it. I use it all the time when I travel, even on weekends as a hobby. I have been really happy with it and would highly recommend buying a drone, and if you can afford it, this is the one to get.
You always have be to aware of national regulations and the regional restrictions based on distances from sensitive sites like airports or military installations. And some countries / airlines want you to check it in your bag, while others require you to carry it on the plane. Sometimes the drone has to be registered, and the pilot may need a license.
A great app called AIRMAP makes you aware of these requirements, shows the go/no-go locations on a map, and allows you to fly the drone from inside the app.

My guess is that it records digital video and Apple makes video editor software final cut.
My take is that Apple likes to think of itself as a high end digital hardware / services company for creatives. Cameras and filmmaking play a central role in selling their products- look at how they market all their iPhones. It's "the camera does this, the camera does that". A drone is a flying video camera, so it fits quite well.
