Apple today added the M2 Max and M2 Ultra Mac Studio models to its online store for refurbished products in the U.S., allowing the desktop machines to be purchased at a discounted price for the first time since their June 2023 launch.

The entry-level M2 Max Mac Studio with 32GB RAM and 512GB SSD is available for $1,699, which is a $300 discount off of the standard $1,999 price. The base model M2 Ultra machine with 64GB RAM and a 1TB SSD is priced at $3,399, a $600 discount off of the regular $3,999 price.

Apple is offering multiple M2 Ultra and M2 Max Mac Studio models for purchase at the current time, and all of them offer similar ~15 percent discounts off of the standard prices. Discounts range from $300 to $1300 depending on configuration and starting price.

The 2023 Mac Studio models were introduced in June 2023 alongside the Mac Pro models. They offer Mac Pro performance and the same M2 Ultra chip in a more compact package.

All of Apple's refurbished Macs are close to identical to new products. They are subject to a refurbishment process that includes full functionality testing, with any defective modules replaced, as well as a thorough cleaning and inspection. Refurbished products are eligible for AppleCare+ and have the same 14-day return period as new Apple devices.

Refurbished products are a great way to save some moneyโ€ฆ i have tried this when i bought an ipad mini 2 and the device was just like a brand new product minus the retail packaging. I guess the only downside is maybe the resale value due to it being a refurbished unit and not with original packaging. But otherwise amazing value.

These just showed up on the Apple Canada store. Iโ€™m waiting for the M3 iMac, but this is certainly tempting.

One thing that bugs me about Mac desktops is that unlike PC desktops no keyboard and mouse is included. That strikes me as ridiculous nickel-and-diming at this price point.

I think value wise it is quite a good deal:

new m2 pro mini $1299
10c 16gpu
16gb 512gb
(I consider it 1399 if you want to buy a dock that lets you have ports in the front)

refurb base studio 1699
12c 30gpu
32gb 512gb

If you need a computer by it now. refurbs are a good way to get a decent discount. Yes the M3 may have ray tracing and a pumped up GPU when it arrives but its only worth it if you need it, be, happy with what you have if it works fine. I needed a new Mac and got a Mac mini Pro 16gb with the 1TB SSD, fast as hell it really shocked me, more than I'll need probably need and it made my old intel i7 2017 iMac (may it rest in peace) feel so slow, and that was a top of the line line BTO model with maxed out ram, sadly the PSU was on the way out.

The studio is a great machine if you need that much power or you price a mac mini pro into Studio territory, then its a no brainer, you go for the go for the studio. Apple will keep pushing the envelope, there is always the next best thing round the corner and its a fools errand to try to keep up, unless money is not an issue or you can will reap the cost back via your work. For my needs the Mini Pro is a great machine and M2 Pro is just fine, yes a M3 will come along, but I needed a machine now and the mini was upgraded this year, yes you could just keep waiting for the M3 but there will be a M4 sometime.

Are these the ones that were returned for being whiny?
When you say whiny, do you mean they'd sit on your desk and irritate you by blurting out at random and key intervals. "Couldn't you get me a stable power supply?", "jeeze you've got no design aesthetic". "Call this a desk!!". "Your lighting is obnoxious and BTW you've spilt food on your t-shirt". "No don't put your coffee cup on me you bozo. You're going to spill it". "You're a slob, you haven't done the dishes for two weeks". "You're ugly!!!".

I admit that would probably cause me to sell it too.

Am I right in thinking the terabyte storage model has faster storage than the 512GB model?
well looking around I found this.https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/01/entry-level-m2-pro-macbook-pros-have-slower-ssd-performance-than-m1-versions/

Judging by what I've read though the consensus seems to be that most users wont actually notice it in real world use.

I'm currently dithering between a 1tb and 2tb Mac Studio. I know I can use external drives which are cheaper but I'm just wondering about machine longevity with a 1tb. The marginal cost difference between the two at that price split over say 6 or 7 years is not worth worrying about. I can pick up the studio now in 1tb form or wait weeks to get one with 2tb (and the dates seem to be moving out on all Macs across the board for delivery in the UK - not sure why).
