nice.. i hope they can send us an update to unlock our current iphones..like they did in europe.. this would be sick!!..then i can really use my phone internationally:cool:

looks like you missed the keyword in my post. MICRO-SIM.

it doesn't matter if an MVNO (h20, c bell etc) is using at&t tower, they are using regular/standard size SIM cards, not MICRO-SIM. that's why you must get your service from at&t (at least in the USA) whether your iphone is locked or not.

can you tell me which provider use micro-sim cards in the US?

Looks like you don't know regular sim can be cut down to MIRCRO-SIM and still work.

Yep it will be available unlocked. I just hope it will be a world phone and unlocked so I can use it on Verizon in the US and GSM carriers when I'm outside of the US.

Forget about it, if you plan to travel to Japan. I have an officially unlocked iPhone since more than a year, bought it from Apple in Hong Kong to use it on my frequent trips in Japan. No chance, as there are no pre-paid sims available to visitors; plus, Softbank, Apples official carrier uses special sim-cards. Unless you are willing to pay ridiculous roaming charges, your iPhone is a brick in Japan. Complain about AT&T? They look like amateurs when compared to Softbank and the Japanese communication Mafia

I have never had a problem with service when travelling in Europe. Companies like Vodafone have cover all over the place - through own net, subsidiaries or partners. No need to get another sim or plan. Or did I get your question wrong?

Yes you got it wrong. native coverage, not roaming.

You can see the EU carriers get more customers per square mile. Most americans like being able to go from NY to LA and still have service. Show me how many EU carriers get service from Lisbon to Kiev (about the same distance as NY to LA)?
I've driven from London to Moscow and had service practically all the time along the way. :D

Well, the problem is that you are changing countries, in any case yallo provides you with european coverage.

But that's the thing, in Europe you have a multitude of companies that each get to manage much smaller areas of coverage - often times government funds help with the cellular infrastructure too if I'm not mistaken.

In the US, a single company has to cover an area that rivals the size of Europe. There also isn't much opportuntity to make money off of roaming agreements, since the only countries that border us are Mexico and Canada

iPhone Prices for Europe

Yes, they are £510 and £612 in the UK (including 20% VAT) so you are getting it cheap in the US. :D

$749 (w/o sales tax) = Euro 524 (1 EUR = 1.42983 USD)
EUR 779 (w 20% tax) = EUR 649 (w/o 20% sales tax)

European customers pay EUR 125 (USD 179) more - this is a 25% price hike (based on the U.S. selling price of EUR 524).

I have a friend going to the US next week. If I get him to purchase me an unlocked iPhone, the website says it will work no problem here in UK. My question is, if something goes wrong with it, will I be able to take it into the Apple store in UK or not . . .I'm thinking not!

Reasoning for buying in the US is that it is just under $276 cheaper than in the UK

I think AppleCare is global but somebody will correct me if I am wrong on that.

In any case remember that on importing anything over £135 from the US you are liable for UK VAT at 20%.

If I want to buy an iPhone 4 16GB in the US for $649 then how much tax I should pay? I mean how much is iPhone 4 16gB plus tax in Chicago?

Well I'm not importing it. He will purchase it and bring it back into this country.

Geez, do unlocked phones usually cost this much?
ow yeah, in Belgium all carriers sell them unlocked, but prefer if you take 2y contract on top of that...

Phone contracts are like abusive relationships.
amen to that

Here in Holland we pay the same prices in euros... so they're actually cheaper than elsewhere I think.
humf? If the iPhone costs the same amount in Euro as in USD, it's cheaper in USD, not the other way around...

iPhone unlocking...

I think after your two year contract is up, phone companies should be required to give you a code or something to unlock your phone if you'd like. I know T-Mobile does it, but the iPhone just isn't really easily/legally unlockable with just a code.

finally Apple!!!

nice! :D I hope this is not just for iPhone 4 until iPhone 5 comes out crap...it should be on all iphones from now on. Done. Give people a choice.

Actually, the airports in Japan all have places where you can rent phones and sims.

A little over a year ago, I took an unlocked iPhone 3G, went to Japan, and rented a SIM card. It worked fine for voice calls but no data since I didn't want to pay for data. And so I stayed in Japan for 2 weeks with an iPhone 3G on NTT Docomo.

I'm assuming that I can't just walk in to an AT&T or Verizon store and just pick one of these up. No Apple Stores near me and I need this phone asap for father's day :p

That is an import. The law is quite clear on this - if he fails to declare at customs, he is illegally evading VAT in the UK.

There are exceptions if you have lived abroad for over 12 months and the goods were not purchased in the last 6 months, but otherwise 20% VAT is due.
