Bytedance is a gatekeeper, and is neither American nor European.

Booking.com is a gatekeeper and is a Dutch company.
Thank you for informing me. Those two companies don’t come up often when the DMA is discussed. It’s good to know at least two companies on the list are not USA based companies.

Waste of money. The EU doesn’t base decisions on logic or common sense, rather on how much revenue they can extract from US tech companies because of their failed tech industry.
Yep. I think they should just pass an additional tax on US tech companies to help bolster their poor finances rather than doing this silly process with extra steps.

That would be fine by me, since they pay squat here. Meta just got a 35-year 100% property tax abatement on a data center they are building a county over. Raise electric rates for everyone else, deplete the water table, pay zero in property taxes....not sure what is in it exactly for anything other than Meta.

these things usually get justified with job creation and increased local economy as those people need living and have living expenses. not trying to justify ...

They will be employing about 50 people, which includes security guards. So $9 million/year of property taxes saved by Meta.....the county isn't getting $9 million/year of utility or economic boost....not even close.

..but yes, that is how it is getting justified.

How many people will move to that county and pay property tax, sales tax, car registration fees, eat at local restaurants, buy power, water, pay for the sewer, trash, etc etc etc. You can’t just think “Meta got a tax break,” you also have to think “what are the secondary, tertiary, etc. effects from this.” Your county got boned - you shouldn’t be happy about this

Property tax should be illegal…

And so should politicians wasting tax payers money.

None. It's in the middle of an warehouse park 30 miles from any town, restaurant or homes. There is no public services, local transport, trash service or anything of the sort. They will be commuting from a city, 30 mins away, in another state...and the entire facility will have about 40-50 employees.

The property, and close areas, are decommissioned military property that is too toxic for homes or anything other than warehouse-style facilities.

The only thing that county, or mine, will get is higher electric bills, which are already some of the highest in the country…and I live in the Midwest.

I gotta admit: came in ready to leave a smarmy comment about lobbying but the nuanced takes in here unironically educated me about what lobbying entails

I just hope this increased expense means we’re getting iPhone mirroring sometime within this decade

As the owner of about 30 acres (and 3 acres in another state), and parents who own over 300, I disagree.
So you are okay with the government going, “oh you haven’t paid your property taxes. To bad, we are going to seize it, sell it for a fraction of what it’s worth, and if you don’t come up with the money a year after the sell its final.”

You do realize, that one of the reasons our US founders fought against the British was to prevent this type of government behavior!

Yes, I am, because said taxes pay for the fire department, which we have used. The schools, which we have used. It funds our public library, which we heavily use. I could go on and on.

My property taxes are low... less than 1% of accessed value, and most of my acreage is forest, which is taxed at $1 per acre, but even if it wasn't, that's okay.
