Interesting perspective. I suppose it's a matter of what you get used to. I live in California and normally watch on ESPN which is Sky F1's coverage and I really like the blend of Brundle, Crofty, Chandhock etc.. The image quality sucks.

I don't gel with the F1TV hosts at all - despite the higher quality streaming. Also - I watched the Silverstone GP this past weekend in the UK and it didn't seem all that different to Sky's coverage.

Be interesting to see how Apple handles it if they secure the rights. Something like https://www.lapz.io/ would be amazing with AVP.
All footage is filmed and dictated to by “F1” its then brought buy others, who all receive the same footage timings graphics camera angles etc but are allowed to add commentary and addition coverage behind the scenes. Sky presenters are obnoxious , bias and not good. I've 40 plus years off f1 in my life

Personally I don't think they would be big enough to have a bid excepted! It not just about the
Money it about the audience! Espn have the numbers and the viewing figures.…. Apple has nothing special to offer. The commercial right holder have a obligation to sponsor

F1 is a big driver of carbon neutrality. The engines are the most efficient hybrids in history. Next year they are moving all of the vehicles to carbon capture based fuels.
F1 will be going back to V8 in a few years. These hybrids are way too expensive and complicated (not to mention boring from a racing viewpoint).

Putting themselves exclusively on a niche streaming service doesn’t sound like a strong way to improve the audience for F1.
The guys running Apple are obviously very savvy, but Apple TV seems to be influenced by what would be fun for the execs. It would be fun to go to races and meet drivers and owners. Fun to say you are behind an international, prestigious circuit.
Makes no difference to me. I don’t care about Apple TV or F1. Maybe it makes sense - pair a sport that has a small American audience with a streaming service that has a small subscriber base.

Girls love F1 for some reason. No clue why but they do.

Because it's dangerous

Because Brad Pitt. ;)
I can't lie... the guys are cute. But I was also a bit of a daddy's girl growing up, and, well, he worked at various car dealerships throughout my childhood, so I fell in love with cars early on. When I took him to see the F1 movie last week, he enjoyed it so much that he said, "if we had time, I'd stick around and watch it again!" We ended up going to see it again in IMAX Laser later last week, and I even got a lot of of the story, on top of getting so much out of seeing my dad enjoying himself.

Sounds good, but what about the tires? Quite heavy use of those.

I asked ChatGPT and it seems there’s also progress on the tires, so good. But still must be quite an impact?

Anyway, what irritates me more is all the unnecessary idle driving a lot of people do every day. I understand there is quite a huge amount of gas that would be saved globally if people stopped that.
lol you're concerned about the carbon footprint but are using ChatGPT whose data centers require immense amounts of power to run?

Seems like a good idea.

More value add for ATV+ would be a good thing.
It will probably be a separate subscription though just like MLS. There's already a pretty solid F1TV app for Apple TV and it now supports 4K and other features that aren't found on other platforms. This season only Apple and Roku supported the new 4K streaming package, with some features only working on Apple TV.

Ahh .. Good point.
I don't sub to any of it, so it's all a black box to me.

Thx for adding this detail.

Apple balked at the nfl deal because they wanted to be the only game in town. It would be weird to resell F1 coverage with F1TV right there with a fully featured package in the App Store.

Once I turned off the glitchy complicated feed with all the different options, it’s been great this season.

Yes, we have it at work (paid). So might as well use it. Each prompt doesn't do much, but of course its total has a considerable carbon footprint. But I think/hope it is worth it in this case – that the return of what it gives back is better.

But you mean it's better to just stop using ChatGPT and use… something else?
Is it okay that I have compensated by not having owned a car in my soon 47 year old life and that I haven't eaten meat since I was 25? :)

But the fuels are 100% sustainable going forward. It’s made from agricultural waste, no prime growth ingredients allowed, and it’s a “drop in” fuel, compatible with modern internal combustion engines, so not like E85 which requires special parts. At scale the fuel F1 will be using (and F2 already is using) can be put in any car, so it’s a path forward to a sustainable fuel for everyone. Complete petrol replacement

And since F1 cars could run on gas from you local petrol station, though not as well, that’s a pretty big deal. They aren’t using jet fuel, or anything extraordinarily exotic. Just precisely tuned normal gasoline, and next year it’ll be precisely tuned vegetable gasoline

I don't see the appeal in F1 at all. Weird pick.
Different stroke, etc.

For me the appeal is the fact that these are super high tech vehicles that represent some of the finest engineering in the world. Each team constructs their cars essentially from scratch according to very very picky rules. Many technologies that have been developed for F1 have made it to road cars. I just geek out on the engineering of it all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If Apple can get the global rights and basically just broadcast the F1TV production - by all means, they have the cash.

I enjoy their MLS season pass offering and LOVE that it's available worldwide, unlike the current F1 TV Pro which is annoying when travelling abroad.

I don't see the appeal in F1 at all. Weird pick.

Like any activity, some people immediately see the appeal, others take time, and some people see the appeal but decide it’s not for them. In this instance, there’s quite a bit of diversity of subject matter to consume your time with. Much of F1’s appeal is derived from being on the “cutting edge” of technology, where the smallest of details can make the difference between positions…

Girls love F1 for some reason. No clue why but they do.

Likely similar reasons that anyone likes anything. F1 has done a really great job pushing various aspects of the activity, on and off the track.

There is quite a lot of social media and engagement with the drivers, teams, and others involved. So much so that it has a similar reality tv vibe to it, but also easy to ignore.

That’s good, but not the only aspect. Tire wear is a major source of microplastics in the environment.

F1, and automobile racing, has generated quite a lot of technology that, when applied to consumer vehicles, has offset quite a lot of the pollution.

As far as microplastics go… plastic is in so many consumer goods that it likely generates the majority of microplastics in the environment, from obvious ones like clothing, blankets, microfiber to less obvious ones like tyres, single-use plastic packaging/bags, and personal care products that may take time to release microplastics.

Work-from-home solves a lot of that - talk to middle management and executives who are made nervous about not being able to stare at their employees during the day, despite any gains made in productivity. EVs also help in this regard - still vehicles on the road, but at least not burning anything.

Getting vehicles off the road is a good long-term goal. Two paths to this (both of which should be pursued vigorously) are: (1) eliminate needless travel to the extent possible (for starters, see above about WfH - millions of vehicle miles every day could be eliminated), and (2) make public transit an actual viable, preferable, choice everywhere (we have cities where trolley tracks were ripped out 75 years ago - at the behest of car manufacturers - to make way for wider roads for more cars - we need to reverse this process/mindset). I spent a few weeks in Europe, twenty years ago - it was impressive just how easily we could get around in - and between - the countries there, using high-speed rail, buses, subways, etc. - we never drove or flew between countries while we were there (oh, also, the vast majority of the cars we did see were substantially smaller than all the Urban Assault Vehicle monstrosities on the road in the US). And so many cities were walkable. They also had a lot of better approaches to keeping traffic flowing smoothly, that weren't just putting stop signs or traffic lights on every corner.

We need to both put in more public transportation (buses, trolleys, light rail, high-speed rail, etc.) and rework sections of cities (and mandate for all new construction) to make them more walkable / bike-able, so cars aren't needed. BTW, there's a fascinating YouTube channel called Not Just Bikes that deals with a lot of this.

F1 and similar do use resources, yes, but you're talking about dozens or hundreds of cars, out of the hundreds of millions of cars worldwide. They're not a significant source of pollution / emissions.

Formula 1 viewership doubled from 554,000 to around 1.1 million in 2024, rising further to 1.3 million in the first 10 events tis year.
yes. again. I don't see the appeal. I don't know why you quoted this piece of the article.

there's a Korean taco truck near me that has 1 hour lines. the fact that it increased from 30 minutes to 1 hour doesn't really have anything to do with me not seeing the appeal of this mid-tasting taco truck.

Grand Prix was James Garner, and Steve McQueen was Le Mans. I re-watched Grand Prix earlier this year, after being reminded about it by the "And, colossally, that's history!" podcast from Matt Bishop and Richard Williams, two long time motor racing journalists and Matt also ran communications for McClaren and Aston Martin in the noughties and teens, so they know the big names of F1 personally, from the 60s on.

If you like F1, especially its rich history, it is a brilliant podcast to subscribe to - it is run through "The Atheletic".
Oops thanks McQueen then and Garner. That was last century so exact details are fuzzy.

I hear ya, but I live in the suburbs of Raleigh, NC, and public transportation is pretty much non-existent. And riding bikes on these curvy backroads is a recipe for death. With that said, we have two EVs.

My family and I were in NYC this past week, and I loved using the subway and how everything is a relatively short walk or ride away. However, the prices for everything is INSANE. According to Bankrate, the cost of living in Manhattan is 140% higher than where I live -- ain't nobody got time for that! :p
I am not in NYC Thank God
