Apple now worth more than Wintel (Microsoft and Intel combined)
    Friday, June 3, 2011 · 4:45 pm

At market close today, Microsoft (MSFT) had a market value of $201.59 billion. The market value of Intel (INTC) stands at $115.21 billion.
Microsoft's Windows combined with Intel forms the portmanteau "Wintel," which refers to personal computers that, when they're working, can most charitably be described as upside-down and backwards Macs with weak immune systems.

So, add 'em both up and you find that the "Wintel" is worth $316.8 billion. As you might imagine, we've been watching these values with anticipation for quite some time and today, for the first time (ever?), the closing value of Apple (AAPL) $317.60 billion exceeded that of Wintel. Just in time to make a nice slide for somebody’s WWDC keynote address (hint, hint).

Longtime Mac users, gaze at the headline, let it wash over you, and bathe in some of the purest Schadenfreude ever concocted.

This milestone reminds us of a quote uttered 13 lucky years ago:

What I can’t figure out is why he [Steve Jobs] is even trying [to be the CEO of Apple]? He knows he can’t win. – Bill Gates, June 1998

    Smirk.

    ------------------------------------------

An interesting observation in classic MDN style.

To All the Apple die-hards out there - the one's who always believed in this crazy tech outfit, even during its darkest days - this one's for you. Enjoy.

Nice find on the quote. It is amazing that not many years ago Apple was close to going bust and now they are one of the most successful companies ever.

That is actually quite impressive, to think they were on the brink of death a little over ten years ago.

When you see it in numbers like that it puts into perspective just how far Apple have come. I guess that what nobody saw back then was that apple didn't try to win, they played very well in the existing game (mac v pc) whilst inventing a new game at which they excelled.

Interesting news. Shame about the source and the terrible writing.

LTD is putting down Intel? Aren't they the ones that, like, supply the very things that power Apple computers?

They are but Apple has shown it doesn't matter who/what powers Apple (PowerPC to Intel, ARM for mobile). Heck, even Microsoft is making Windows 8 for ARM.

My predicition is that in ~5 years you'll see Apple making all of their own chips. They already customize ARM designs for all the iDevices and once the speed gets close to what Intel is offering they'll drop Intel and go in-house for desktop/laptops as well. I could be wrong, but it's definitely a possibility.

So what scrappy little company will be displacing Apple in 13 years?
Congrats, Steve. May Apple not become what it railed against in the early days.

He wants the Mac to die ASAP and be replaced by iDevices with Apple processors. :(

More opportunity to buy. Before it goes through the roof.

In terms of market cap, however, they'll pass Exxon.

They should just do a 10:1 stock split. The unit price is what is holding the shares back.

I'm hoping they take over the oil industry too.
